Panther Print for Parents 🐾
WEEKLY UPDATE FROM THE PRINCIPAL-AUGUST 29, 2024
RETURNING STUDENT ENROLLMENT FORMS
We hope you're enjoying a fantastic summer! As we eagerly anticipate the return of our Panthers in the coming weeks, we're excited to streamline this year's enrollment process for you and your family.
In previous years, returning students were required to complete a stack of paperwork during the initial days of school. This year, and moving forward, we have simplified this process by allowing you to complete all necessary forms directly from your phone or online device. These forms are essential for ensuring the safety and security of our students and staff, as well as maintaining the most accurate information for each student.
Attached, you will find detailed instructions on how to access and complete these forms. Should you have any questions or need assistance navigating the website, please do not hesitate to contact your child's school.
We look forward to a successful and smooth start to the school year!
Best regards,
Watervliet Public Schools

In order for your child to receive his/her Chrome Book on the 2nd day of school, these enrollment forms must be completed. Please call our main office if you need assistance. Thank you.
WHAT'S UP IN ART CLASSES THIS WEEK?
In art class, we kick off the year with a strong emphasis on collaboration to help students get comfortable sharing ideas and working as a team. Here are some images of our Advanced Art students working together on abstract paintings inspired by Kandinsky. Meanwhile, our Sculpture students explored kinetic art, focusing on wind-powered pieces. Their group challenge was to design and construct a sculpture that could move in two different ways when placed near a fan.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
There is a Student Council Meeting at 7:00 am on Thursday, 9/5 in the Media Center - members, please be on time!
Ms. Powers will be meeting with any student individually on Tuesday who has yet to complete online enrollment forms in order to receive a chromebook. All students should be in possession of their Chromebooks by Tuesday.
Students must be picked up at the end of the day on the cafe/gym side of the building. No students are allowed to be picked up by anyone in a car in the front of the building. Do not exit out the front doors of the building.
There will be a Debate meeting next week Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 a.m. in Room 137. All members planning on participating on a competitive debate team must attend.
If you are dual enrolled, you are required to attend a dual enrollment meeting on Tuesday either at the start of 1st hour or the start of 5th hour. Be in the media center one of these times to review expectations for dual enrollment. This meeting will take only 15 minutes.
There is no school Friday or Monday due to the Labor Day weekend.
All drivers need a WHS parking tag in your car by Tuesday in order to not be ticketed. Officer Thornsbury will be checking for stickers on Tuesday morning. If you need a sticker, come to the main office.
On Tuesday we will start tracking tardies in the building. If you are late to any class as of Tuesday, you will be sent to the office for a tardy pass. The third tardy equals a detention.
There is a Student Advisory Council to the Principal meeting on Wednesday at 7:30 AM. This team of students meets with Ms. Powers to review concerns and ideas for the building. This year’s representatives are:
9th Grade: Jayden Brassard, McKaylen Laws, Katelynn Brown and Miranda Lowell.
10th Grade: Allison Poole, Norma Gutierrez, Hailey Adams, Hanna Lomoro, and Mackenzie Birmele.
11th Grade: Moeko Crago, Keira Tremblay, Abby Klopp, and Natalaya Desjardin.
12th Grade: Alyssa Brown, Aubrey James, Jorge Zuniga, and Ayana Marshall.
If you have a concern or ideas that you would like to see shared, please share it with your class representative.
There is a permission slip in the counseling office for an Oct 4th optional field trip to The Maximum Mold Group in Benton Harbor. Juniors and Seniors interested in Engineering, Tooling, Machine Technology, and welding are encouraged to attend. The bus leaves at 9:15 and you will be back by 11:45.
ATTENTION SENIORS:
As of now, we have eight students who have shown interest in serving as representatives for our Senior Class. If any other students would like to throw their hat in the ring and represent our class, we welcome additional candidates. Please have interested individuals inform Mrs. Scheetz by August 29, 2024. Should we have more than eight candidates by this deadline, we will hold a class vote on September 3, 2024, to determine our final representatives.
STAFF SPOTLIGHT--MRS. RICHCREEK, MAIN OFFICE SECRETARY
I was born in Chicago but moved to Michigan when I was 4 years of age where my family landed in Coloma. Yes, I am a former Comet! While attending CHS a million years ago, I was very active in all things high school. I was a member of marching and concert bands in which I played baritone. I loved sports so I was a member of the volleyball, basketball, and softball teams. I also participated in several variety shows. In my senior year, I was voted to be “Mayor for the Day” where I attended a government day at Coloma Township Hall. I was also voted as class clown.
My immediate family consists of my husband and three daughters. My husband is bi-vocational; he owns and operates Richcreek Water Pumps Sales and Service and is also the pastor of our church, Revive Church, in Coloma. We are celebrating 38 years of marriage as of Friday, 8/30.
My oldest daughter, Jessica, works at Hear Michigan as a Hearing Care Provider. She resides locally, is married, and has my only two grandchildren, Gianna and Clark. Gianna attends WHS and Clark will be 3 years of age on Veterans Day.
Next is Katie, she is married and resides in Chicago. Katie is an alumni of GVSU and is currently a senior project manager for the advertising firm of Energy DBBO.
Jamie, my youngest daughter, is a former graduate of North Central University in Minneapolis where she resides with her dog, Major. Presently, Jamie is a general manager of an Applebee’s restaurant.
As far as my position at WHS, I am the building secretary and administrative assistant to our principal, Ms. Powers. During my tenure, I coached 6th grade basketball, advised Student Councils as well as performed class advisor duties. I have also participated in staff skits in previous WHS variety shows.
In my free time, I enjoy traveling, reading, motorcycle riding with my husband, going to the movies, floating in my pool during the summer, and spending time with family and friends.
The best part about being a Panther is the awesome students and amazing staff here at WHS. I am honored to be part of a top-notch team that truly cares about our students. Go Panthers!
STAFF SPOTLIGHT--MRS. TYLER, COUNSELING OFFICE SECRETARY
My husband, Jim, and I have been married since 2011. We have two kids who both attend Watervliet schools, Adelyn who is in sixth grade and Preston who is in second grade. We also have 3 cats named Caramel, Dragon, and Marshmallow. Jim is a member of the Board of Education for Watervliet and is the technology director at Niles Public Schools. Addy loves softball, basketball, band, and performing in musicals. Preston plays baseball and basketball and can rattle off countless baseball facts at the drop of a hat.
I graduated from Watervliet in 2006 and have an Associates in Science from Lake Michigan College. Here at the high school, I am the Guidance Secretary. I love being able to see all of the students at the high school and work with Mrs. Dawson to help them in any way I can. I guide our kids in dual enrollment and help to ensure credits transfer to their preferred schools after graduation. I am also the Student Council co-advisor with Teri Richcreek, where we work with our kids to plan Homecoming and Winterfest, just to name a few.
In my free time, I enjoy reading, crocheting, and watching kids (my kids and high school kids!) play sports. I am also the treasurer of the Elementary PTO and help my husband with the many things that he is involved in.
I am proud to be a panther because Watervliet offers so much to our students! We have a caring staff, involved student body, and are able to make sure our kids have a plan for after high school!
AP SEMINAR (ADVANCED ENGLISH 10)
As a way to have students think critically on global issues, students started the year by looking at issues from various perspectives. The colored glasses represented different "lenses of viewing" issues, such as orange representing a social perspective, green- environmental, white-health and well-being, yellow-economic, etc. This activity prompted students to think beyond their own perspectives and develop an approach toward argumentative writing by narrowing a global issue topic.
WHO IS MR. COBURN?
My name is Chris or Mr. Coburn (whichever you prefer), and I'm the College and Career Adviser at Watervliet High School. I'm here to help with any questions about college, financial aid and scholarships, career options, and planning for after high school. My role is split between Watervliet and Coloma High School, so please see my location calendar that I put out every month or email me at Christopher.Coburn@watervlietps.org.
OUT OF DRESS CODE
The image that you see to the right does not meet the dress code at WHS. This year, we are seeing many young ladies wearing over sized sweatshirts hanging down on one or both sides like you see here. Students who come to school out of dress code in this manner, will be addressed.

On the following page you will find an outline with activities/fundraisers and important dates for this year.
Our major fundraiser this year is the Panther Pride T-shirt Campaign. Keeping You In Stitches will design and make our t-shirts to sell to the school and the community. The cost of the t-shirts are $15 and the goal is to have everyone wearing their Panther Pride ((Victory in our Veins ) t-shirt for Homecoming on October 11th. We will make some money from the sale of the shirt but the major money will be from selling ads that will be printed on the back of the shirt. We will need your help selling ads for the Panther Pride T-shirts! Business card ads will be listed at the top of the shirt and sell for $100. Below the businesses will be a list of individuals who also support our class and those will sell for $50. What a great way to support the Class of 2025 and show your Panther Pride!

It is time for young adults desiring admission to the Michigan Youth Challenge Academy for Cycle 52 (beginning January 12, 2025) to get started in the application process.
MYCA is currently transitioning to a new application system. Due to this transition, applications are not yet available. In the meantime, it is recommended young adults and their parents/guardians prepare by gathering all required documents (link to list is found on our homepage), along with registering and attending a mandatory information session, which are being held around the state right now. The schedule can be found here.
Application to the MYCA is a multi-step process and should be started early for best chance of admission. Deadline for application is no later than December 13, 2024. We urge applicants not to wait to apply.

PANTHER PRIDE T SHIRT CAMPAIGN
ATTENTION SOPHOMORE PARENTS!
Sophomore Parents and Students
Kelli Lomoro and I, Teresa Collins are your Class Parent Advisors. We are here to help with
various high school activities and help generate funds for the Sophomore class.
We have a quarter auction fundraiser on September 22 at 4:30 at the FOP Lodge in Coloma.
Local businesses have been very generous in donating gift cards. Tickets are $5 and can be pre
bought or bought at the door. If you would like to help sell these let me know. We will need
parents to help donate baked goods and food for the concession. If not we will use class
funds for this.
Homecoming this year will be on October 11th. More details to come as we get closer to that.
Our goal is to raise $3,000 by the end of Sophomore year. Freshman year we raised $570 from
Safari Joes give back and $715 during winterfest walking tacos/dance concessions. So far this
year we have raised $800 from LECO picnic and currently we have $400 from a pop bottle
fundraiser. Exact total from that will come once that is complete. We are hoping to raise at
least $1500 from the quarter auction so make sure you come and bring your friends to support
us on September 22!!!
We would also like to set up class officers to help with ideas, get student involvement and help
get information out to the sophomore students. More to come on this once school starts.
Each year students are required to pay $20 for class dues or $60 for all of HS years. We can
collect this by cash, check or Venmo (@Kelli-Lomoro). These dues go into the class account and
help with various activities throughout their high school years. If you did not pay your
freshman dues, those need to be paid ASAP. Sophomore dues can be paid now as well.
There is a Facebook page that is set to private so only members of the group can see the posts.
Please join the page if you have not. This page will be used for the majority of our
communication with parents. Watervliet HS Class of 2027

BUS REMINDERS
Information for a change in transportation must be submitted to the transportation office no later than 12:00pm on the day needed for approval.
The bus garage will no longer accept changes to a drop off location if it comes in after 12:00pm. This causes unnecessary stress on our drivers. If the change is to be for several days or permanent, we will note the change starting the next day and give the driver the information when they return from their route.
Once the buses leave from the high school, they will no longer stop to let someone who missed the bus on. If this happens, the student will need to come to the office and call home. This is a safety issue for all students and drivers. This is especially dangerous at the MS/HS bus loop.
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS
Each week of the school year, the faculty at the high school will review with your child the expectations in one area of the building. This practice will start this coming. The purpose of teaching and reviewing these expectations with your child is to 1. Make sure they understand the expectations in the building and 2. Assist them in having success at the high school. Please review the cafeteria expectations at breakfast with your child. These will be reviewed this coming week.
