McAvinnue's Community Newsletter: Week Of May 10th
Hello McAvinnue Community...and Happy Mother's Day!
First, I wanted to wish all of the mother's in the McAvinnue community a very happy and special Mother's Day! Today is your day....take it easy and put you feet up and enjoy this day that is all about you!
Here is a brief but interesting history of Mother's Day and how it all came about...
Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. In the United States, Mother’s Day 2021 will occur on Sunday, May 9th. The origins of Mother’s Day as celebrated in the United States date back to the 19th century. In the years before the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis of West helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children.
These clubs later became a unifying force in a region of the country still divided over the Civil War. In 1868 Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day,” at which mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation.
Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”
Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service.
Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.
Have a great Sunday...and I hope that this upcoming week will be a smooth and successful one for everyone!

McAvinnue's "Walk-A-Thon" Fundrasier...EXTENDED!
As everyone is aware...we are going to extended the fundraising opportunities for McAvinnue's "Walk-A-Thon" Fundraiser for one additional week! The new date for the McAvinnue "Walk-A-Thon" will be Friday, May 17th.
This means that you and your child have more time to raise money and see if you can earn one of the amazing prizes! The final day to get your fundraising donations in will be Friday, May 17th. We will make the winning announcements on Monday, May 20th!
The fundraising donations are really coming in...we doubled our total in just 2 days this past week! Simply amazing!
We shared out an updated total and who is in the current lead for earning the prizes during the Friday edition of McAvinnue's Morning Announcements! You can check out the video below in the Morning Announcements section of this newsletter!
Here is a breakdown of how this fundraiser will operated...check out the details below!
This fundraiser is really simple...all students need to do is raise and turn in as much money as possible starting on Monday, April 29th - Friday, May 10th. Students can bring in money throughout the week in an envelope with their name and homeroom number on it...and drop it off in the Main Office. We will record and track the amount of money that each student is able to raise. Students are encouraged to ask those family members and friends to "sponsor" them for this great and fun fundraising event! Please keep in mind that the money that is raised for each student is not connected to the number of laps that they walk during the Walk-A-Thon.
This event will occur during the school day for all grade levels at their assigned Specials time. Grade levels will walk in the gymnasium during their 50-minute scheduled Special. We will have cool lights, music, and many of our faculty will be joining in on the action! Students will walk as many laps as possible to show their appreciation for the money that they raised, which will be donated to McAvinnue!
We have some prizes for those that raise the most money for McAvinnue's "Walk-A-Thon" fundraiser! Check out the list below to see prizes that can be earned for the top fundraisers, including a "mystery" metric winner:
- "Principal For The Day": The top 2 fundraisers will earn a chance to be "Principal for the Day"! They will work with Mr. Domina and Mr. Alcaraz for an entire school day and help them with all of the things that they need to do. This prize includes a special lunch with Mr. Domina and Mr. Alcaraz. Also, each student will receive a special Principal's ID badge. Students can dress up like a Principal as they will have some important work they will need to do on this day!
- "Top Homeroom Fundraiser": The homeroom that raises the most money over the next 2 weeks will have a chance to earn a very special classroom lunch and dessert! The winning homeroom will have a chance to decide what they have for lunch and dessert!
- "Top Grade Level Fundraiser": The grade level that raises the most money over the next 2 weeks will earn a very special "Frozen Treat Recess"! Each grade level winning homeroom will head over to Father Maguire park for a special "extra" recess that will feature a delicious frozen treat!
- "Mystery Winner": We will have a "mystery" winner that will be chosen based upon a "mystery metric"! This could be the most money turned in during a day, most laps walked during the Walk-A-Thon, or some other action that demonstrates a high level of effort and committment for this fundraiser. This student will earn at $150 Target giftcard!
You can start raising and turning in money starting on Monday, April 29th! Remember that we will be collecting money until Friday, May 17th! Just make sure that the money is placed in an envelope with the students' name and homeroom number on it. All money needs to be turned in to Ms. Anna and Ms. Natalia in the Main Office.
Money that is raised during this event will go right back to our students for various school supplies and materials, field trips, special shows, and more!
If you have any questions, please reach out to the school or Mr. Domina directly!
