Intentional Practice
We had our first evacuation drill of the school year this week. Sometimes, practicing things like lockdowns can be uncomfortable, but I want to compliment our students and staff in this space today. Everyone did an amazing job, and I'll tell you a bit about the logistics that Assistant Principal Mrs. Garza put together. Students leave the building with their teacher and move to the football field. We use a series of exit doors to avoid bottlenecking and get everyone out quickly. Once we get to the field, each class has a specific yard line designation. In the photo you can see that at the end of each line there is a sign on a stick. The signs have the teacher's names on them and they are two sided. One side is green, and the other is red. Once each class is organized on their yard line and the teacher verifies that all the students who were present when they left the building are now accounted for, they show me (up in the press box) the green sign. This system allows us to very quickly identify if there are students missing, so in a real emergency we can begin a recovery process. Mrs. Garza and Mr. Hilen are both on the field to provide immediate assistance to staff, should the need arise. Because of these specific and thoughtful plans we were able to get all 900+ Sentinels out of the building and accounted for in just over nine minutes!
Getting better, every day. - Jake

Spring SBA Family Reports Now Available
Thank you for your patience as we awaited the Individual Score Reports (ISRs) for the Spring 2024 Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) tests, which were delayed by OSPI. They can now be found in Skyward Family Access by clicking on the “Portfolio" link on the left-hand side. You can print the SBA results from home, or you may request a paper copy from your child’s school. If you need assistance logging into Skyward Family Access, instructions are available on our district website.
Washington State requires all districts to test students in grades 3-8 and grade 10 in English Language Arts and Mathematics through the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA). Additionally, students in grades 5, 8, and 11 take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). These assessments are required by both state and federal regulations and provide valuable insights into areas of strength and growth as students work toward meeting state learning standards.
Your student’s overall performance in each subject area is categorized into one of four performance levels, which describe the extent of their understanding of grade-level skills and standards. The performance levels are as follows: (see image below)
If your student attended a school outside of the Steilacoom Historical School District during the 23-24 school year, a request for the record will need to be sent to the previous school. If you have any questions regarding your student’s assessment performance, please reach out to your student’s teacher(s). For questions about the student assessment score report, feel free to connect with Mr. Tyrrell or Dr. Laurie Vallieres, Executive Director of Teaching & Learning.
