What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
Fans of poetry will enjoy this collection that delves into themes of loss, yearning, and how time passes ever so quickly spanning a career of over 60 years. A few of my favorite poems from this collection are: 'Hesitations Outside the Door,' 'Three Praises,' and 'He Shifts from East to West' but you can't go wrong with this entire collection with a 4.26 Goodreads rating.
"The hookworm, in the eye of
the universe, which is the unsteady gaze
of eternity maybe, is beloved. How could it not be,
living so blessed, in its ordained red meadows
of blood where it waves like a seaweed?
Praise be, it sings with its dracula mouth.
Prase be."-from Margaret Atwood's 'Three Praises'
Happy reading, friends! ~Heather
I recently read 'The Only Survivors' by Megan Miranda and it was a big miss for me. This book had a lot of potential with its large cast of characters to have more but it wasn't giving it. The book stayed very surface level, and I almost didn't finish it but what kept me intrigued was the then and now. Nine students survived a horrific accident in high school, and they made a pact to see each other every year for a reunion. Cassidy Bent was the main character and narrator but throughout the story we heard from the other survivors. I stuck it out to hear their side of the story of the accident, but again I thought it would give more, and I ended up disappointed. The climax hit with 30-50 pages left of the book, but nothing shocking that had me at the edge of my seat. I would be open to trying a different book written by Miranda but for me this book was just "meh" because of it's incredibly slow burn.

"Into the Uncut Grass" by Trevor Noah:
This beautifully illustrated book by Trevor Noah brings out the playfulness we sometimes forget as adults. It is an easy and quick read with a friendly reminder to make time to be curious and open to others’ perspectives in life. Read along as this young boy and his bear Walter discover the importance of connection and compromise on their adventure Into the Uncut Grass.
I found this to be the perfect “book-break” to read between my regular selections of murder and mystery.

All right, all of you readers out there, I've got something special this time! I just discovered a brand-new book, the first in a series, and I think you're going to love it. It is the perfect time of year for this story, but I'd like it any time.
In the beginning, we find a short back-story about Cabin 23, just creepy enough to send a shiver up your spine. Then, the story begins: Elaina is about ten years old and has been sent to summer camp. During the first two hours, she has decided that she hates the food, her bunkmate, and every tree and camp counselor. So far, not a happy start to her two weeks at camp.
While pouting in her cabin, Elaina hears a knock at the door but when she goes to the door, nobody is there! A strange fog suddenly starts to push her along, down a path...
And now, you must read this creepy book to see what happens! I love it, and also the second book, "The Night of the Living Head." Both books are available at the Vinton Public Library and on Libby. Enjoy!
~Connie
