Christmas Traditions
The best time of the Year!
Christmas holidays and family traditions!
Christmas holidays are holidays when people celebrate birth of Jesus Christ. Now Christmas is a time of the Year when we all get together with our friends and family. We usually celebrate it at home. In Russia Christmas is the 7 of January not like in Europe or America. In my family we usually celebrate christmas at home because in Russia at 00:00 the president of Russia says a speech on TV and we all have to listen to it and after that party hard. In the morning the 31 of December we open Christmas presents that are under the Christmas tree. In our family we do the Christmas tree 1 of December.
Advent
The Christian season of Christmas actually begins on Christmas Eve and lasts for twelve days, ending on January 6. The time before Christmas is Advent, a season of preparation for Christmas. Christians prepare for celebrating the birth of Jesus by remembering the longing of the Jews for a Messiah. In Advent we’re reminded of how much we ourselves also need a Savior and we look forward to our Savior’s second coming even as we prepare to celebrate his first coming at Christmas. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin word advents which means “coming” or “visit.” In the season with this name we keep in mind both “advents” of Christ the first in Bethlehem and the second yet to come. During Advent in my family we do a Advent Calendar.

Boxing Day
- A ‘Christmas Box’ in Britain is a name for a Christmas present.
- Boxing Day was a day off for servants and when they received a ‘Christmas Box’ from the master. The servants would also go home to give ‘Christmas Boxes’ to their families.
- A box to collect money for the poor was placed in Churches on Christmas day then opened the next day.
- Great sailing ships when setting sail would have a sealed box containing money on board for good luck.If the voyage were a success the box was given to a priest, opened at Christmas and the contents given to the poor.
- Boxing Day is the 26th December and is a national holiday in the UK and Ireland.
- Boxing Day is a time to spend with family or friends, usually those not seen on Christmas Day itself.
- In recent times the day has become synonymous with sport. Horse racing is particularly popular with meets all over the country. Many top football teams also play on Boxing Day.
- Boxing Day is also a time when the British show their true eccentricity taking part in all kinds of silly activities like swimming the English Channel - not the warmest place on December 26th - fun runs and charity events.
New Year
The 31 in the evening we usually all get together with my family. We stay at home and we have a lot of food on table. At 00:00 the president of Russia usually gives a speech and after that we go to Place Du casino at 00:00. Because of the time difference we have two hours. When here it is 00/00 it is 2:00 in Moscow. In our family New Year is the most important time of the year. Usually at Place Du Casino there is loads of people.
