PRINCIPAL CORNER
Good evening OSES Family Members,
Thank you to everyone who attended our Curriculum Nights. The nights were designed to allow parents, students, and staff to come together and see what’s in store for students academically. OSES prides itself on providing an academically challenging environment, however we still need help from the home. Be sure to communicate with your student(s) and teachers, whether it’s face-to-face, through school supported applications, or an agenda. If you are reading this newsletter, you are bridging the gap between home and school. Academically we are ramping up and looking forward to seeing what our students are capable of doing. The time to ask questions about our schools academic policies and procedures is now.
I hope your family has a great Labor Day weekend, whether that is traveling or just sitting at home relaxing. Maybe you will see me at the Rays game on Sunday!
If there is one general law of communication it is that we never communicate as effectively as we think we do. – Charles Handy

Curriculum and Testing Updates
Our kindergarten and first-grade students started their FAST assessments this week and will continue through September. Second-grade students will take their assessments next week.
Third and sixth-grade students will take their first FAST assessments immediately following the long weekend. Please ensure your students get a good night’s rest, have a healthy breakfast, and are on campus no later than 8:00 am. This is the first assessment that will test students on their current grade-level standards in Reading and Math, and the results are for informational purposes only. Access to student scores will be shared at a later date. Grades 4-5 will take their assessments the following week.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Lamour
Our students have been diving into the exciting world of science! This week, they explored what it means to be a scientist and the various tools scientists use. Their first experiment involved milk, food coloring, soap, and a Q-tip—allowing them to observe the fascinating reactions that occur when these elements come together.
In addition to our science adventures, the students have been sharpening their presentation, questioning, and listening skills during Show & Tell. I’m so proud of their persistence as we tackle more challenging content in literacy and math. We’ve been working hard on recognizing different types of punctuation and incorporating them into our sentences during whole group lessons.
I’m excited to see what discoveries and achievements next week will bring!✨
FIRST
Quarterman
This week in first grade, students have been learning how to ask WH questions for different subjects. When we see a picture in Social Studies or Science, we might ask “Who is that in the picture?” or “How fast is that cheetah running”. We are learning to think about different details before we start writing.
Students are also engaging in hands-on, cross-curricula activity. We read a fiction book called, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and building a “raft” for the Billy Goat Gruffs to avoid the troll lurking under the bridge.
F.A.S.T. testing is this week and next week. Please check with your student’s teacher for the dates. It is helpful to get students to school earlier enough for the school’s breakfast. If they come after 7:50, please make sure they eat. It is also helpful for students to get enough rest and be on time!
If your child is missing a lunch bag, reusable water bottle, or school jacket, please have them check the lost and found. Students' names should be on everything!
1st grade would love a few donations of small cases of disposable water bottles for those students that forgot or misplaced them. It is hot outside, and we want to keep the kids hydrated.
Please start saving your cereal boxes for our upcoming Cereal Box Book report, more details are coming soon.
DiNuzzo
Congratulations to Olivia Y. in Ms. DiNuzzo’s class for completing Addition Facts under 6 seconds in XtraMath!
Yina L. For Addition XtraMath
Sophia F. from Ms. DiNuzzo's class for Addition XtraMath
SECOND
Layher
In second grade this week we are learning about how to persevere through difficult tasks. Students are practicing their growth mindset throughout the day as we grow our academic skills. In math we manipulated colored cubes to show us that you can change the order of the addends, and the sum is the same. We also used our claim, evidence, and reasoning skills to test if fried or baked foods have more fat. A quick reminder that FAST testing is next week on Wednesday (reading) and Friday (math). Please make sure your student is well rested, eats a healthy breakfast, and has a pair of working headphones. Enjoy your long weekend and we are looking forward to another great week.
THIRD
Patel
This week in third grade has been fantastic! We’ve been diving into place value and rounding in math, helping us understand numbers better. In reading, we’ve explored how to determine an author’s purpose and use context clues to enhance our comprehension. Our social studies lessons have introduced us to the concept of government and its functions, while in science, we’ve been discovering the different properties of matter. It’s been a week full of engaging learning and exciting new knowledge for our students!
FOURTH
Baker
This week in reading, we are diving into the exciting world of inventions! Students are using their reading and writing skills to describe an invention they would like to create. As part of this project, they will also design both a digital model and a 3D paper model of their invention.
Our fourth graders have been doing an outstanding job adjusting to building 2, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts!
Thank you for attending Curriculum Night. We hope you enjoy this 3-day weekend!
FIFTH
Coy
Ms. Coy- This week in Math, we have started Topic 1. The students are learning about using Place value to understand fractions and decimals. For example: 0.325 would 325/1,000. We also have been working with writing numbers in different ways for standard form 0.325, expanded form (3x1/10) + (2 x 1/100) + (5 x 1/1000), and written form zero and three hundred twenty-five thousandths.
In Science, we have been learning about the steps for a scientific investigation and the engineering design process. For the scientific investigation we did a bubble lab using different amounts of dish soap. For the engineering design process, we had a paper airplane challenge.
SPECIALS
Erickson- PE
This week in PE, students engaged in activities designed to promote teamwork, coordination, and to have fun. We played “Hula Hut Relays”, where they worked together to build a hula hut using thinking strategies and collaboration. The younger ones played a game called “I Want a Home”, where students practiced movement and spatial awareness while finding a designated “home” involving a hula hoop.
SIXTH
Pitoniak- ELA
As we settle into the new school year, we are thrilled to see our students demonstrating their eagerness to learn. In English Language Arts (ELA), we’re diving into exciting topics. Currently, we’re exploring figurative language by identifying metaphors, similes, alliteration and other literary devices. We are also delving into author’s point of view. From first person narratives to third person limited and omniscient perspectives, our students are learning how an author’s choice impacts the way a story unfolds.
Next week, our sixth graders will participate in their first FAST progress monitoring assessments on Tuesday and Thursday. These assessments help us track their growth and ensure they’re on the right path. Parents, please be sure that your children arrive on time and are ready to give their best effort.
Bravo - Spanish
In Spanish Class We are learning the ABC’s and Numbers and students worked on a Greeting’s Conversation. They used that conversation to create a Comic Strip. Coming up, Students will pick one of the Spanish Speaking Countries to do their PPT presentation about. The rubric will be explained in class and posted in Google classroom next week.
