April 2024 Newsletter

We welcome the sunshine and warmer weather as we (hopefully) say goodbye to colder, snowy days. Spring Break has been off to a warmer and sunnier start. Here's to hoping it stays that way! With the warmer weather comes the clothing debacle so many of us face- do we wear a sweater? Do we wear a winter jacket? Am I still sending boots? The answer to all of these questions is simply yes. Please continue to send your child in with boots, and stick a sweater in their backpack as a "just in case." Fresh air and movement fuel the body and mind, so we will be going outside every day unless it rains.

Here at Cold Spring, we are beginning our end of year planning. This means we will be reaching out if your child is recommended for Summer School. We will be sending home questionnaires seeking information about your child to better plan for class lists for next year. We are also starting to plan for our end of year festivities. These include our very popular Literacy Night, Expo, and Field Day. Stay tuned for more information to come in the next few weeks.

We held our second PBL Day on Friday, March 22nd. Our theme this time was based on the environment and how we can help our environment. Students chose their learning path from the following options:

1.) How can you create an animal rescue?

2.) What is the best way to clean up an oil spill? (Different soaps were used and students decided which soap was the best)

3.) How can you create something new from something old? (Some students created recycled paper!)

4.) How can you separate recyclables easily? (Students created their own transfer station)

5.) How can you transport recyclables to the transfer station?

Students should be proud of their planning and creativity while working together to solve the problem in their learning path. These projects will be showcased at our Environment themed Expo on May 31, 2024. Times to be determined and communicated as we get closer to the event.

This month we celebrate the joys of poetry. Jack Prelutsky, Shel Silverstein, Maya Angelou, and Alan Katz are just a few of the many talented poets that bring joy to readers. This month we celebrate our differences, focusing on people with autism. National Autism Awareness Month raises awareness for autism and Asperger's syndrome. Autism is a brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate, respond to surroundings, and form relationships with others. This can be difficult to explain to young children. Here is an article with resources on ways to explain autism.

The projected forecast right now is calling for sunshine and clear skies on April 8th! Thank you to the PTA who will be providing protective eyewear for students to view safely. The timing for our area to view the solar eclipse seems to be right after dismissal.
