The Role of Sleep in Education
As we strive to support our children's academic success, it's essential to recognize the critical role that sleep plays in their overall well-being and educational outcomes. While we often focus on providing enriching learning opportunities and fostering a stimulating environment, we must not overlook the importance of ensuring our children get enough quality sleep each night.
Why is Sleep Important?
Sleep is not just a time for our bodies to rest; it is a crucial period for our brains to recharge, consolidate learning, and process new information. Research consistently shows that adequate sleep is essential for cognitive function, memory consolidation, attention, and overall academic performance. Inadequate sleep, on the other hand, can impair these cognitive processes, leading to difficulties in learning, problem-solving, and academic achievement.
How Much Sleep Do Children Need?
The National Sleep Foundation recommends the following guidelines for sleep duration by age:
- Preschoolers (3-5 years old): 10-13 hours per night
- School-age children (6-13 years old): 9-11 hours per night
- Teenagers (14-17 years old): 8-10 hours per night
The Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Education
When children consistently fail to get enough sleep, it can have a significant impact on their academic performance and overall well-being. Sleep deprivation can lead to:
Reduced Attention and Concentration: Lack of sleep can impair a child's ability to focus and concentrate in the classroom, leading to decreased academic performance and difficulty retaining information.
Memory Problems: Sleep plays a crucial role in memory consolidation, so inadequate sleep can hinder a child's ability to remember and recall information learned during the day.
Behavioral Issues: Sleep-deprived children are more likely to exhibit behavioral problems such as irritability, mood swings, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, which can disrupt classroom dynamics and hinder learning for themselves and others.
Health Consequences: Chronic sleep deprivation is associated with a higher risk of obesity, weakened immune system, and mental health issues, all of which can impact a child's ability to thrive academically and socially.
Tips for Promoting Healthy Sleep Habits
As parents, there are several strategies we can implement to support our children's healthy sleep habits:
Establish a Consistent Bedtime Routine: Create a calming bedtime routine that includes activities such as reading, bath time, or relaxation exercises to signal to your child that it's time to wind down and prepare for sleep.
Limit Screen Time Before Bed: The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep. Establish a screen-free zone at least an hour before bedtime to help your child relax and prepare for sleep.
Create a Comfortable Sleep Environment: Ensure that your child's bedroom is conducive to sleep by keeping it cool, dark, and quiet. Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows to promote restful sleep.
Encourage Physical Activity: Regular exercise during the day can help promote better sleep at night. Encourage your child to engage in physical activities they enjoy, but avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime.
Model Healthy Sleep Habits: As parents, we serve as role models for our children. Prioritize your own sleep health and demonstrate the importance of a consistent sleep schedule.
By prioritizing the importance of sleep and implementing strategies to promote healthy sleep habits, we can support our children's academic success and overall well-being. Together, let's ensure that our children are well-rested and ready to tackle each day with energy, focus, and enthusiasm.

Parent Involvement Opportunities and Donation Requests
One of our campus goals is to build more parent involvement on our campus. As parents, you know your child best. We want to partner with you to consistently make our school better. Below are several opportunities where you can be involved or provide feedback.
- School Beautification - Join us on the morning of Saturday, March 2, from 9:00-12:00, for a campus beautification work day.
- February Lunch Volunteers - We are looking for volunteers to help out in the cafeteria during lunch. Click on this lunch support sign up link if you are interested.
- WatchDOGS - Click this link for more information, the program presentation from the district, the background form, and the registration form.
- Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) - Join our PTO! The cost for an entire family is only $7. Our PTO is an organization of parents that works to support our students and staff in a variety of ways. They recently purchased some toys and games that students can play with at recess. They also bring in special programs and activities for our students and find ways to show appreciation to our staff. - Parent Feedback Form - Any time you want to share your thoughts, you can email, call, or make an appointment to visit. Another way you can provide input is to simply complete our parent feedback form at any time. Your responses are anonymous unless you choose to include your name and/or contact information.
Field Day Rescheduled
A Note from Mrs. Ontiveros
Thank you to all the families who donated phone books to music class! The 3rd grade students have been working hard at becoming Bucket Drumming Karate Ninjas in rhythm. They learned how to keep the beat, play quarter notes, eighth notes, and rests.
As you can imagine, 20 kids drumming buckets in one room can be quite loud. With the phone books it lessened the noise and made it a more enjoyable learning experience. The students were awestruck that people "a long time ago" had to look up phone numbers in a book. In addition, at the end of our lesson, we learned how to find our favorite restaurant chains and the students were delighted to find coupons inside as well.
Thank you again for helping our students have a great time learning rhythm and, in this case, a valuable, not so long ago, history lesson as well.

All About Lunch
Lunch Schedules
Lunch visitors who are on a child's emergency contact list are welcome to eat with that child on the stage during the student's lunch period starting on August 28. Visitors will need to check in at the front office with their ID and get a visitor badge. Please do not invite other students to join you or provide food or snacks for other students. When lunch is over, all students will line up with their class. Visitors will return to the front office to turn in their visitor badge.
A friendly reminder, we do not have an open lunch policy so please do not order food for your child from outside vendors to be delivered to the school during the school day (i.e. Uber Eats, Grub Hub, Door Dash, or any kind of delivery service). This becomes a safety concern when staff need to leave the front office to deliver food to students or take their focus off of families who have business in the office. Food deliveries also increase the number of unfamiliar people entering the building. Additionally, our lunch times are very tight and do not allow for late deliveries. We cannot allow for learning to be disrupted by early or late food deliveries. Thank you for understanding our focus on safety and uninterrupted instructional time.

School Hours, Attendance, and Tardies
- Doors open at 7:50
- Tardy bell rings, and class begins at 8:15. (This is the time students are expected to be in their seats in the classroom.)
- School day ends at 3:40
We are working hard to maximize each and every minute our students are here. Students who arrive after 8:15 are considered tardy and will need to be walked into the front door of the building and signed in by a parent or guardian. If your child needs to leave early, they may be checked out through the front office by a parent or guardian no later than 3:15 pm.
Attendance is of critical importance to your child's academic success. Click here on a district update regarding attendance procedures for the 23-24 school year. Rather than sending a note to school with your child upon his/her return from an absence, parents will enter the absence information through Family Access in Skyward. Directions for entering the infomation is availble in the link above.
Changes in transportation need to be made prior to 2:00 in order to allow time for the messages to be communicated with the appropriate staff member. To request a change of transportation, either
- Send a note with your child,
- Email LincolnElementaryTransit@misd.org with the note and a copy of your driver's license, or
- Come to the school with a copy of your driver's license.

Lincoln Elementary is a Pre-K through 5th grade campus in Montgomery ISD that opened in the fall of 2018. We are dedicated to collaboration that focuses on ensuring high levels of learning for every student, every day, in a safe and supportive environment.
