Nassau News
March 2024
Dear Nassau Families,
As we head into Spring, we are preparing our second grade students to move onto their new adventures at Hagan School while also eagerly awaiting our new kindergarten class beginning in September! As we reflect back and plan for the future, It’s hard to believe that the 100th day of school is behind us.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Spring Break!
Best,
Erik Lynch
Principal
CELEBRATING LUNAR NEW YEAR
Nassau Elementary School held a Lunar New Year celebration on February12th, where spectators learned about Chinese New Year traditions. The Mid-Hudson Chinese Language Center presented a dramatic Lion Dance. There were also impressive yo-yo performers. After their demonstration, they helped Spackenkill students learn how to use this traditional toy. Families also enjoyed such crafts as Chinese calligraphy and paper lantern making. Korean New Year games and sweets and Lunar New Year noise drums were also part of the program. Many thanks to the Yoo, Lee, Byun, and Zhao families for all of their help and support. They certainly helped create an authentic and memorable night for our community.
MRS. BRIODY'S 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL
The first grade classes at Nassau celebrated the 100th Day of School on Monday. The students participated in several activities and centers throughout the day. Students predicted how far 100 footsteps would go. They exercised for 100 seconds and they even wrote about what they will be like when they are 100 years old. Mrs. Byrne took pictures of the students to show what they will look like at 100! Fun was had by all!
SECOND GRADE VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP
Mrs. Boyce’s second grade class adopted a sea turtle from the Jekyll Island Georgia Sea Turtle Center last summer. They adopted a juvenile green sea turtle named Bandit, who was found stranded on Little Saint Simons Island, Georgia in 2021. She has been healing from a boat-strike injury resulting in partial paralysis. Our class has been enjoying all of the pictures sent and updates on Bandit each month. They have even written friendly letters to Bandit for the holidays.
On Tuesday, they took a virtual field trip to see the Jekyll Island Sea Turtle Center. Students spoke to the staff there and learned about turtle habitats, adaptations, and conservation. We met a loggerhead turtle, Petuna, from Cape Cod, MA, an Olive ridley turtle with a walnut colored shell, and several green sea turtles, including Bandit.
We learned that Bandit is now weighing in at 68 pounds, loves to splash the staff members, and wears a weight on her shell to keep her more balanced in the water, since her back flippers don’t work well. They expect Bandit to have an important job of teaching others about being careful when boating. Sea Turtles can live from 60-100 years. The class is hopeful they will send Bandit to an aquarium near us so we may visit her in person.
Tall & Small Ball
On Friday, March 1st, kindergarten thru fifth grade joined together at Todd Junior High for a night of dancing, friends and fun. This Spackenkill Elementary PTA event was a sold out event and a complete success. The students had a night to remember and certainty dressed to impress!!
Thank you to the PTA, all the volunteers and to all that attended.
