Newsletter Week 1 Term Two
Reporoa College 7th May 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Nga Mihi
Term Two is underway and there is plenty on at the moment.
Firstly I'd like to thank our senior leaders who attended the Local ANZAC services during the holidays.
Winter sports are underway with a large number of students participating.
The support of the community is outstanding and I wish to thank all the parents that turn up and help with transport, watching the games, coaching and managing. Your support is greatly appreciated.
In staffing news, Jane Goss is still recovering from some complications from her treatment and has extended her sick leave to the end of this term.
We wish to welcome Matthew Leavitt to our Reporoa College staff, he replaces Anastasia Marnoch as a Physical Education Teacher. Matthew is from Canada, but has links to Taupo through his parents. We welcome him and his whanau to Reporoa !
This term is vital that the students settle into their work routines, the bulk of NCEA internals are completed in term 2, therefore, attendance is crucial for all students. If you are considering taking your child from school then it is more difficult for them to catch up when they return. If students miss due dates this creates gaps in their learning. Unless they are sick or it is a family emergency then they should be in school.
On Monday and Tuesday next week we are hosting Karen Tui Boyes. She is a well regarded speaker who helps students develop skills in study and work. She will be running sessions with our seniors over the two days. On Tuesday at 6pm in the school library she will be running a session for parents of students at Reporoa College. This will be covering how to support students in their study at home.
A reminder about our school uniform. Students can wear a plain black puffer or jacket outside. This must be removed when they enter the classroom. Plain white or black thermals can be worn under the polo’s. We have a large number of second hand Polar Fleeces.. that we are happy to hand out to students if they do not have one or are feeling the cold.
Remember my door is always welcome,
Have a great weekend and Happy Mothers Day to all the wonderful Mums out there

Orienteering
· BOP Summer Nav Series
Each Wednesday evening during term 1 the College Orienteering Team competed in the BOP Summer Nav Series held at various locations around Rotorua such as the Redwoods, Hannahs Bay, Kuirau Park, Lynmore Streets and Springfield. Big congratulations to the entire team who picked up the Top School title ahead of John Paul College and Whakatane High.
· MACPAC Rogaine
Held at the end of last term on Long Mile Road this was a 2 hour team race in the surrounding forest. A fast run by the team of Robbie Monk, Micheal Stephens and Marcus Brennan saw them place 2nd overall out of 50 teams. A top result boys!
· North Island Secondary Schools Orienteering Champs
This 3 day event held in the Manawatu during the school holidays was our big event for the term and attracted 350 competitors.
Day One was the Sprint Event held around the Massey University Campus in Palmerston North. A superbly complex map with lots of buildings to navigate around and between.
Day Two was out on the coast at Scotts Ferry. When you combine sand dunes with a pine forest you have a map that is very easy to get lost on. I am very pleased to report that no one from Reporoa College required a Search and Rescue call-out……..we even managed to take home a haul of medals. Best results on the day went to Micheal Stephens (1st), Lily Wing (3rd), Zara Pearce (2nd), Doug Monk(3rd) and Harley Brennan (4th) in their respective grades.
That afternoon we celebrated with a trip to the supercool Palmerston North waterslide park followed by checking out the colourful Town Square all lit up in at night.
Day Three was the team relay held around the Massey University Sports fields and farm. A combination of mis-punches, a ripped map and tired legs meant we never really threatened to add to our previous medal tally……..Still it was a fun way to finish and during our Palmey stay we all got a glimpse of what being a ‘scarfie’ could be like.

Adventure Racing – NZ Secondary School Champs
This event was held at Kairakau Beach, Hawkes Bay during the school holidays. Marcus Brennan was part a combined Taupo Nui- Reporoa-Tauhara College team. The 6am race start began with a steep climb up through bluffs in the dark which certainly woke all the competitors up! After 12 hours of trekking, mountain biking, archery and canoeing through squally showers the team eventually finished a very tired but happy 9th overall. The race highlights will be screened on Sky Sport in the coming month.
Celebrating Achievement
Tyrone Brown was recently selected to be part of the Rotorua Basketball u13 boys squad for 2021, the squad entered 2 teams into the recent Basketball Pacific - Mel young Easter Classic tournament played over Easter Weekend.
