Mental Illness Awareness Week
Each year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition — but mental illness affects everyone directly or indirectly through family, friends or coworkers. That is why each year, during the first week of October, NAMI and participants across the country raise awareness, fight discrimination and provide support.
This year’s MIAW will center the theme “Together We Care. Together We Share.” This campaign speaks to the impact of NAMI’s support resources. It conveys the power of coming together in community, which can be healing as people gather to share their experiences. Our hope is that, through this campaign, we can spread awareness of two of NAMI’s major support resources: NAMI Support Groups and the new NAMI Teen and Young Adult HelpLine. APA Celebrates One Year of LaSaludMental.org, Spanish-language Mental Health Resource Site
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) launched LaSaludMental.org, the organization’s first website dedicated to providing evidence-based information and culturally competent resources in Spanish on mental health and addiction.
The first anniversary of LaSaludMental.org demonstrates an increased commitment on behalf of the association to ensure that evidence-based, culturally relevant medical information on mental health and substance use disorders is available to Hispanics and Spanish speakers in the U.S., who represent nearly 64 and 54 million people, respectively.
A lack of resources in Spanish has been identified as one of several barriers to healthcare access for the Hispanic population in the U.S., as well as immigration status and socioeconomic status.
LaSaludMental.org now features four additional pages: E-Cigarettes and Vaping, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Click here to read more on Spanish Language Mental Health Resources Site
