Family Learning Center
Issue 3 - March 2019
A message from Patti Park - the Parent & Community Liasion at the Family Learning Center
The student population at the FLC continues to grow steadily. The camaraderie of the students is strong. And it is really fun to watch the students challenge each other by playing chess and card games after they have completed their studies.
We are fortunate to have received donations of supplies and furnishings making our FLC more complete, resourceful, inviting and comfortable.
As we enter the last trimester, we say good bye to Ashley Harris. Her cheerful, helpful and kind demeanor will be missed. Our staff members and volunteers are appreciated and are a very integral part of our Center. We would be lost without them.
Happy Reading!

MCHS Staff Profile - Michael Bichler
Michael Bichler started working with the Mt. Carmel High School Special Education Department in January 2018 as an Instructional Assistant. During his time at Mt. Carmel, he has helped out in all sorts of classes, primarily with Integrated Math and Learning Strategies. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in Communications with minors in Writing and American Sign Language from the University of Pittsburgh, Mr. Bichler moved to San Diego and got a job working with people that have severe disabilities. That job inspired him to pursue a career working with people that have special needs. His time at Mt. Carmel has inspired him to pursue his teaching credential. If accepted into the program, he will begin classes in the fall at Cal State San Marcos. Mr. Bichler is looking forward to many more years at Mt. Carmel and hopes to one day teach there!
Mr. Bichler wanted to work at a high school because he wanted to make a lasting impact on the student that he came into contact with. Through all the classes that he has helped out in, he has developed lasting connections with many of the Mt. Carmel Students. He believes that each new day comes with new opportunities to enrich the lives of the students.
During his free time, Mr. Bichler enjoys paddle boarding around Mission Bay, hiking all around San Diego county, playing board games with his friends, and baking delicious treats. He is always looking for new trails to hike and recipes to bake. He is always looking forward to tomorrow and is ready to help students whenever possible.

Poway Unified promoted National Say Something Week
Mt. Carmel High School in partnership with Sandy Hook Promise, a national organization led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, took part in the
Say Something Week from February 25 through March 1.
At Mt. Carmel, we worked on educating all Staff, Students and Parents about what it means to be an Upstander.
An Upstander is someone who recognizes when something is wrong and acts to make it right. When an Upstander sees or hears about someone in need, they speak up and offer help. We all have an obligation to act when we see friends, classmates, and strangers on campus, or on social media struggling with issues.
As Mt. Carmel Sundevils, we want to stand up against the stigma and silence and do our best to help support and protect someone who is hurting. Upstanders help direct friends to appropriate resources, provide advice and comfort, and work to ensure that support is accessible for all.
If you see something or hear something, SAY SOMETHING. It’s the Sundevil Way!
