Superintendent's Message
Superintendent Message
Greetings Lakeland Families! I hope you have had a wonderful summer break. Summer this year has been a typical, beautiful North Idaho summer. It is time to start thinking about going back to school… school supplies, school clothes, and Open Houses. We are excited to have our students back in our buildings. Things are much too quiet when they are away. Our custodial crew has been working tirelessly to ensure that all of our buildings sparkle to welcome students and families back. I hope you have had a chance to drive by Spirit Lake and Athol Elementary schools. They have new siding, doors, and windows and look amazing! A big thank you to the school board for their wise use of COVID dollars to allow for the needed focus on our school buildings!
As part of the new library law that went into effect on July 1, 2024, the district is putting a Library Review Committee in place. This committee will be responsible for reading any book for which a parent or community member submits a form requesting the review of a book for material defined as harmful to children. We would like to make sure that we have several people on this committee so we can share the responsibility of fully reading any book that needs to be reviewed. The link to the Google form is here if you would like to participate.
We will be running the replacement of our supplemental levy on November 5, 2024. Our current levy expires on June 30, 2025. School districts now have only two dates on which to run school elections: November and May. Our budget is due to the Press by the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, which makes May challenging. We have put together a levy page on our district website. The link to that page is here. If you take a look at the site and are looking for a tool or information that you believe would be helpful, but not currently there, please reach out to us and we will work to provide that.
It’s going to be a great school year!

District Highlights
If you have been in Spirit Lake or Athol recently you might have noticed some work being done on their elementary schools. Our Lakeland Board of Trustees was strategic in using our Esser funds for approved operational expenses. This allowed the district to generate fund balance savings to pay for the needed siding improvements to the Lakeland Middle School last summer and now Athol and Spirit Lake Elementary schools.
