What's Up With This Week?
August 17th-21st Parent Edition
Academic Meetings
I have scheduled 15 minute individual meetings with each student beginning Monday, August 17th through Thursday, August 20th using the google meet application; each student has been sent an invitation via email. The students whom I'm meeting with on Monday have been sent a reminder through aeries communication. During this individual 15 minute meeting I will be reviewing their transcripts, credits needed, classes, and goals (whether they want to transfer back to their comprehensive schools, gradate early, or simply graduate). If you would like to know your child's allotted time, please reach out to me.
Google Classroom and Virtual Office
Students are encouraged to go to my google classroom to get updates, reminders, and/or important information. Each week I will post my bitmoji virtual office with important resources and information. This week's virtual office introduces my CAREER CAFÉ where students can do some career exploration and/or create profiles to look for jobs. If they need guidance or support they can reach out to me by clicking the nose on my bitmoji and filling out a google form -OR- they can email me -OR- call me.
Helpful Tips To Keep Your Child On A Successful Path During Virtual Learning
- Set up a quiet area in your home: Whether it is in the dining room, kitchen area, living room, etc., have your child work in a clean space, away from distractions, which brings me to tip # 2.
- Remove distractions: Television should remain off during school hours at home. All other electronic devices (phones, radios, tablets) should be put away unless it is used as a supplement.
- Keep a schedule: This is not a vacation. Students should be up and ready for their first class at 8 a.m. Tuesdays-Fridays (Monday's at 11 a.m. to check in with their 4th period teacher). Remind your child that these are school hours and they need to treat this as if they were in their actual classrooms. The good thing about this is that they do not have to be on their zoom sessions all 55 minutes. As soon as the teacher is done: taking attendance, giving instructions for the new content, and explaining any questions that may arise, the students can log off, go to their google classroom and work on that class work. If they are done before their next class begins, they earned themselves a break!
- Attitude is everything! Try to have a positive attitude towards distance learning when working with your child. If you have a positive attitude and stay motivated throughout this time, chances are your child will feel the same!
- Check in with your child: At the end of each week look in your parent portal account for any grade updates. Talk to your child about any missing assignments and ask them if they are struggling.
- REACH OUT TO TEACHERS/STAFF: If you have any questions about your child's missing work, contact their teacher(s), they will have more information and know answers you might have to ask regarding missing material(s). If you have attendance concerns or any further question(s), don't hesitate to contact the office.
- BREATHE. Remember, you are not a robot. Try to block out at least 15 minutes each day to take care of yourself. Whether it's meditation, a brisk walk, listening to music, enjoying a cup of coffee or tea outside, listening to your favorite podcast or music, etc., DO IT! I challenge you.
