Prayer for Halloween 👻
God of Laughter and Joy,
We turn to you in the way of our ancient ancestors,
grateful for the abundance of food and festivity that surrounds us at this time of year.
Keep all children safe as they embark on their Halloween revels.
Light their way through the dark night and enfold them in love.
May the real treat in their lives be grace that multiplies in depth and breadth as they grow older.
We pray this with all the saints in heaven.
Amen.
TRICK OR TREAT 👻
Hello Bruin Family,
We are looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow night at our 5th Annual Trunk or Treat! This event is so much fun every year and we are looking forward to our best one yet this year! There will be food for sale, face painting, prizes, dancing, candy...and yes, the world series will be streamed. You do not want to miss this!
Next week will be full of dress up days as we celebrate Red Ribbon Week and Halloween. Dress up days are listed on the flier below as well as information to place your orders for the Halloween Carnival. The week will close out with our yearly All Saints Mass. The dress up continues as six of our students dress as saints and teach us about these holy men and women. It is a great mass and we look forward to seeing you there!
The week after that we move into Vocation Awareness Week. There will be special lessons dedicated to Vocations and classroom visits from our clergy. We will also participate in the Vocation Poster Contest. Winners will be celebrated in January with a special ceremony.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you all tomorrow night at Trunk or Treat!

COSTUME RULES 👯
We love to have students come in their Halloween outfits to get into the spirit of the holiday but it is important that students still follow non-uniform dress policies as well as the following Halloween-specific rules...
- Costumes should be comfortable to wear for the duration of the school day. If they are not comfortable, students should bring an appropriate change of clothing.
- Shoes must be worn at all times.
- Students are responsible for taking care of their costumes and accessories and the faculty and staff are not responsible for securing costumes and props for the duration of the school day. If items of value are included in the costume then students should not bring these items to school or parents should plan to take these home immediately following the parade.
- Costume elements or props that are suggestive of weaponry or violence of any kind are not permitted.
- Costumes that include face covering masks, blood, or otherwise gruesome make-up are not permitted.
- Costumes that could scare another student may not be worn.
- Costumes should be in keeping with our Catholic values and traditions. Any costume that depicts the devil or is suggestive of satanic ideas are not permitted.
- Costumes that include short skirts are not permitted unless shorts or leggings are worn underneath it.
- Spaghetti strap shirts, bare mid-drifts, and bare-backs are not permitted.
- Costumes that are risqué or sexually suggestive are not permitted.
- Costumes that express alcohol, sex, violence, and/or drug motifs are not permitted.
If you are debating whether or not your child's outfit is appropriate, please submit your costume idea to Mr. Nearhoff first. Better to know beforehand than be sent home. Thank you!

CHILD SAFETY 🚨
Did You Know?
October 26-27 || Trick or treating safety
Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year for children, but it can be a nerve-wracking night for the parents who have to run the show. Consider a few safety tips to get your family ready for trick-or-treating. Choose bright colored costumes and give your children flashlights and/or glow sticks to make them easily visible. Visit neighborhoods you know well, with lit streets and houses. Prep your children with your cell phone number, either memorized or written down in their pockets or even on their arms, in case you get separated. For more tips, visit https://diocesecc.org/news/halloween-safety-tips.
November 2-3 || Signs of potential abuse
A child who has experienced sexual abuse may exhibit one or many of these common behaviors: sleeping troubles, including nightmares, fear, withdrawal from family and friends, anger, anxiety, or depression. Children who have been abused may speak or behave in a manner that indicates sexual knowledge inappropriate for the child’s age. They may also show signs of guilt or self-blame. If any of these behaviors are present, it does not automatically mean abuse is happening, but it does mean you should address the situation, and talk with the child about what is going on. For more information, read the VIRTUS® article “Learning from True Stories of Victims/Survivors” on lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
Mission Statement
To educate TK-Eighth grade students in a Catholic environment in which the curriculum emphasizes spiritual, ethical, and social values of the Catholic faith to become responsible and moral citizens within the global community.
Philosophy
Supporting the belief that parents are the primary educators of their children, we as educators at St. Dorothy Catholic School, dedicate ourselves to partner with the parents in preparing children to become contributing members of the community. To achieve this, we provide holistic development in psychological, emotional, social and physical health, with an emphasis on academics, faith, and Christian service.
In collaboration with parents, we champion student achievement through the presentation, practice, and study of Catholic doctrine, a strong academic curriculum, multimedia and multi-cultural experiences, physical education, extracurricular programs, and the dedicated commitment of the teachers and staff.
