Counselor's Corner
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we continue to support the well-being of our students, I want to bring to your attention a growing concern regarding their exposure to inappropriate content, specifically the TV series Squid Games. Many of our students (all ages) have been discussing this show, which is rated for mature audiences and contains violence, graphic content, and themes that are not suitable for younger viewers.
As part of our commitment to ensuring a safe and positive environment for all students, we encourage you to monitor your child’s media consumption carefully. Discussions and references to this series, and others like it, may be influencing your child’s perceptions and behavior, and it is important to address this.
Key points to discuss with your child around TV and Social Media:
- Privacy Settings: Encourage your child to maintain strict privacy settings on social media platforms and be cautious about sharing personal information.
- Critical Thinking: Teach your child to evaluate the credibility and source of information they encounter online.
- Digital Citizenship: Discuss the importance of respectful online behavior and the impact of harmful content.
- Reporting Concerns: Make sure your child knows how to report inappropriate content and come to you or a trusted adult if they have concerns.
How You Can Help:
- Parental Controls: Use parental control features on devices and apps to restrict access to content that is not age-appropriate.
- Open Communication: Have regular conversations with your child about what they are watching and experiencing online.
- Media Literacy Education: Help your child understand the potential dangers of inappropriate online content and teach them strategies to navigate digital spaces safely.
For more information on the risks associated with Squid Game and similar content, you can visit Our Safer Schools: Squid Game Information and for age-appropriate recommendations, visit Common Sense Media.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us. We are here to work together in keeping our students safe and healthy in their digital lives.
Sincerely,
~ Roxie
