The West High administration team invites parents and guardians to connect with them anytime throughout the school year so we can partner with you as we guide our students to success. New West High School Counseling Team and Support Model
We welcome back two returning counselors for the 2021-22 school year, Ms. Josie Pratt and Mrs. Chris Still, and three new school counselors, Mr. Rulin Pederson, Mr. Anthony Zeliadt, and Mrs. Steph Hames. Also returning this school year is our West High Counseling Secretary, Mrs. Kathie Church.
This coming school year all three high schools have transitioned to a grade-level looping, counseling model. What this means is that each counselor will now be assigned a grade level, and then they will move through each grade with the same students from 9th grade until graduation. Our TAG Counselor, Ms. Still, will now be the counselor of record for all students identified as TAG in grades 9-12.
As students and families have questions about student schedules, please contact the counselor for that student's grade level, or the TAG counselor, either by email, or by leaving a voicemail for that counselor. There will be two days at the end of July (28 & 29) and two days in August (12 & 13) for students and/or families to meet with counselors in person to discuss student schedules for the upcoming fall semester. These opportunities will take place in the West High Media Center.

If a student would like to request any changes to their schedule, they are encouraged to email their grade level school counselor with those change requests, or come to school on the following dates to meet with their counselor in person in the Media Center:

Activities Update
We want to take a few minutes to look back, as well as ahead. There were many successes this past year in our activities department.
We had an interesting school year. COVID changed much of what we did in activities and how we did them. There was modified seating and consessions stands for the first half of the year, and much smaller crowds at all of our activities throughout the entire year. We sent several teams and individuals to state; and ended the year with several state champions, and Academic All State Athlete and several All-State musicians.
There are many changes to our coaching staff, and as we look ahead to the 2021-22 school year, we will have a few more. The constant was our great students and the Westside support we felt all year!
As we look to the fall, please be mindful that many of our student athletes did not have to get new physicals for the 2020-21 school year; if a student did not have to get a physical last year due to COVID restrictions, they will have to get one this year. Please plan to take some time this summer to get them done so that beginning with fall practice everyone can go the first date that practice begins. Make sure to follow Twitter https://twitter.com/WHS_Activities and the West High Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SiouxCityWestHighSchool/ with important announcements that we provide to our West High School students and families. Fall practices will start soon, but we have open gyms and open weight rooms going all summer, so if you have questions about those, please contact the West High School office at 712-279-6772.
Finally, as the summer moves into the middle of July, take some time to reflect on the year behind us, but more importantly, take time to relax and refresh with your family and friends to prepare for the future in front of us. We will start fresh when practices begin in early August, so be ready and prepared for a great 2021-22 school year!

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
