Family Update
September 8, 2024
Thank you for an outstanding opening week! It was wonderful to see so many students just jumping right back into the swing of things! With a full week ahead, please be sure to review some daily processes:
ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL: Student safety is our number one priority! The best thing for a smooth arrival and dismissal is consistency. Each student is identified as having ONE regular way home each day. While we recognize schedules change, please know that students will be dismissed as our records indicate daily. If there needs to be a change, please send a note or contact the office directly BEFORE 3:00. Students will not be permitted to dictate a change in their dismissal without permission from a parent or guardian.
CAR RIDERS: Mr. Rhoades and Ms. Smith were able to collect ALL car rider applications in the first week!! HOORAY! Having pick-up numbers clearly displayed in the front window will assist staff with escorting students to the correct car in a timely manner. Please note the following:
- Please do not unload students at any point of the street or loop unless at the car rider sidewalk.
- Drivers should remain in the car at all times and students should enter/exit from the right side of the car.
- Do not pass any cars unless directed to do so by a member of the car loop team.
- Cars should not be moving along the driveway while students are walking.
- Doors open at 8:45 AM and close at 9:00 AM. Arrivals after 9AM must be accompanied to the main office with an adult.
WALKERS: Thank you for your patience on Friday as we worked to ensure a safe and smooth dismissal. If you have not done so already, please complete the walker application and return it to the school office. Students must have permission to be considered a "Fast Pass" student.
- BEFORE SCHOOL: Thank you for waiting at the corner of the sidewalk and playground. Once the 8:45 bell rings, you may send students down the sidewalk to enter in the car rider door.
- Doors open at 8:45 AM and close at 9:00 AM. Arrivals after 9AM must be accompanied to the main office with an adult.
- AFTER SCHOOL: Thank you for waiting on the blacktop for students to be dismissed.

Please know that using DoJo on the parent side is optional and completely FREE! You should not be asked to purchase anything! Select the images below for more information. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions or need assistance getting signed up.

Attendance
We are pleased to report that we had a 96% attendance rate this past week...which means we hit our goal on week 1!! Well done, Herons!!
As was shared previously, the State of Maryland defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% or more of school days regardless of the reason. Missing 10%, or just two days a month, over the course of the school year can affect a student’s academic success. Studies show that students who are not chronically absent perform better in all subjects (especially in mathematics) and are more likely to graduate than their peers who are chronically absent.
Cecil County Public Schools provides the following standards for regular attendance:
“A student shall not be absent from school in excess of 16 days during the school year regardless of the reason.”
Let's keep up the great work!
FREE: This Thursday... until gone!
