Message from the Principals
Dear South Elementary Family,
I hope this message finds you well as we welcome February! This month is filled with opportunities to celebrate! We'll start with Groundhog Day, a fun way to learn about nature and think ahead to spring. National School Counseling Week comes next (February 5-9) and is a time to appreciate the support our amazing counselors provide to us. Valentine's Day is mid-month and a chance for children to express love and friendship with classmates with special activities ...we'll follow school rules for treats so please do not send in any food. We'll also celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year, a special time for families to come together and honor each other, as well as their elders and ancestors. Lastly, Winter Vacation breaks up this short month. Our focus on kindness, as well as learning about Black History and the Chinese New Year, will make February a well-rounded educational experience!
While we are emphasizing the importance of caring and empathy, students will engage in activities that promote understanding, compassion, and strong peer relationships. Our PRIDE character traits (Perseverance, Respect, Independence, Diversity/Equality/Inclusion, and Empathy) for February are addressed each week and they are: Being a good friend; Showing respect; and, Working as a team.. Families can support this at home by discussing the importance of kindness and recognizing small acts of assistance to others.
We just finished our Middle of Year Assessments and teachers are reviewing this data to tailor instruction to student needs. We will have our Data Team Meetings next week and place students in the What I Need (WIN)/Response to Intervention (RTI) groups to meet individual needs. This round of WIN/RTI will also include sessions of social emotional learning strategies to ensure that students are supported in all areas of learning. After that, Progress Reports will go home on February 7th . If you have questions about your child’s progress, please reach out to their teacher.
We appreciate your continued support in making South Elementary School a special place for our students to learn and grow. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Wishing you all a fantastic February!
Aloha, Steph Brown and Rebecca Hurley

From Our School Nurse, Ms. Bertrand
● Students MUST be fever free for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medications (e.g. Tylenol, Motrin, etc) before returning to school.
● Fever: If your child has a fever (100 degrees or higher), they CANNOT be in school.
● Rash: A rash may cover the entire body or only one area. A child that has a rash that is draining, has open areas or is causing the child to itch excessively should not attend school. A rash accompanied with other symptoms such as: a fever, sore throat, irritability, vomiting, etc. should not attend school. If your child is excluded from school for a rash and a physician evaluation is required, please have your child’s physician write a note that they are not contagious and may return to school.
● Vomiting/Diarrhea: A child who has vomited should wait 24 hours and be able to retain solid foods before returning to school. A child who is having frequent diarrhea stools should not attend school. If there is cramping/abdominal pain with diarrhea, the student may be more comfortable at home.
● Cough/Runny Nose: Minor cold symptoms are common and usually don't interfere with school attendance. A persistent, frequent cough and/or constant nasal drainage may affect your child's performance at school, and they may be more comfortable at home.
● Conjunctivitis and/or Strep Throat: If you suspect your child has conjunctivitis ("pinkeye") or strep throat, they should be seen by a doctor. A student needs to be on the prescribed medication for 24 hours before returning to school. A doctor's note is REQUIRED upon returning to school.
● Head Lice/Nits: Head lice is a common condition in elementary schools and is a reason for exclusion. Parents/guardians are responsible for checking their child's hair on a regular basis. If lice/nits (eggs) are found, parents should notify their school nurse and contact their physician for treatment recommendations. Upon return to school, all cases will be checked by the school nurse to ensure no lice/nits are present. Parents must accompany students back to school where the nurse will check them. For chronic cases, a doctor's note may be required for re-entrance to school as determined by the school nurse. Please note, students will be sent home if lice/nits are found. If multiple cases of lice/nits are noted within a building, families will be notified to help minimize the spread of cases. The extent of the notification will be determined by the building principal in conjunction with the school nurse.
* Documentation from The Physician: Any time your child sees their physician regarding illness, rash, injury, surgery, etc., your child must return with a note stating specific date child “may return to school” and any restrictions or limitations that may be required (no PE, recess, etc) and specific date when activities can be resumed.
**Very Important: As always, whenever your child is going to be out ill or for any other reason, please give the school a telephone call that morning by 8:30 AM. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

GRADE 1
In writing, we have worked on responding to reading and have had so much fun learning how to use descriptive words in sentences as we wrote clues to see if our classmates could guess what we were writing about.
During Math, we have practiced adding and subtracting on the number line, learned how to fill in missing numbers on the number line, and used the number line to count by tens. We are starting a new unit of study where we are learning about measuring and comparing as we take a virtual field trip to Antarctica to study penguins.
As you can see, we've been super busy...OH and we completed our Middle of the year benchmarking. Whew...I'm tired just writing it all down!
There's lots to look forward to in February including our celebration of the 101st day of school! These kiddos are halfway through our first grade year and time is just flying by...I'm not ready!
GRADE 2
2025 has been off to a great start in second grade! In our interactive read alouds, we have been reading stories about how to find beauty in the world around us and various realistic fiction stories. Our newest book set is an author study of Jan Brett books. In reading, we talked about expanding our opinions about books. Next, we will be studying the illustrations in fiction books. In writing, we added suspense into our writing by using red flag words as a way to entice the readers. We wrote about a main event using actions, sounds, dialogues, and thoughts. Our next focus will be on endings. In phonics, we reviewed our predictable vowel team unit, and began working with unpredictable vowel teams starting with ‘ie’ and ‘ow’. In math, our focus has been on measurement. We talked about inchworms, footworms, and yardworms. The students had a lot of fun working through the workplaces related to measuring all the items around the classroom. Up next.. Place Value to 1,000! Our Number corner for January included various bar and picture graphs, probability, and fractions. In social studies, we created a mini-book about us “on the map”. Our latest science mystery explored why toys were made out of plastic. We will continue to explore the properties of materials and matter over the next month! We also want to take this opportunity to welcome Miss Almeida in 2nd Grade as a student teacher in 2T.
GRADE 3
As the winter season settles in, the learning in third grade is just warming up! Students returned from the winter break energized and ready to dive into new concepts with enthusiasm.
In reading, we have continued our exploration of nonfiction texts, with a particular focus on identifying the author’s point of view and understanding the characteristics of biographies. As part of our biography unit, students have been learning about influential figures such as Bessie Coleman and Tyree Guyton.
In writing, we have successfully concluded our narrative writing unit and have shifted our focus to response-to-text writing. This important skill requires students to read a short passage and construct a written response based on the text. They are learning to craft strong introduction and conclusion sentences, use transition words effectively, and incorporate text-based evidence to support their ideas. In addition to strengthening their response-to-text skills in preparation for MCAS, students are also developing strategies for the multiple-choice section of the assessment.
In mathematics, our lessons have been closely connected with our Number Corner activities, particularly as we explore measurement and fractions. This month, students have engaged in hands-on learning experiences, such as a classroom scavenger hunt to measure mass, length, and volume. Additionally, they have practiced telling time to the nearest minute, calculated elapsed time, and deepened their understanding of fractions.
In science, we recently finished an engaging unit on forces and motion. Through a series of hands-on experiments, students investigated key scientific concepts, including friction, gravity, and magnetism. Meanwhile, in social studies, we have begun studying the causes of the American Revolution.
We look forward to another exciting month of learning ahead and appreciate your continued support!
Grade 4
We have had a great month of learning and lots of indoor recess fun!
In math, students mastered finding equivalent fractions and converting fractions into decimals. We are moving toward reinforcing place value to learn the standard algorithm for addition and subtraction into the millions.
In science, we are in the middle of our Earth's features unit. Students are investigating fossils, and land erosion, and will apply their skills to brainstorm ways to survive a landslide.
In ELA, students are wrapping up informational writing by incorporating "golden bricks". We are moving into writing creatively by elaborating on important details.
In Social Studies, we are wrapping up Native American cultural regions in the United States and moving toward early exploration.
Grade 5
Students came back from break ready and refreshed!
In Math, we just mastered rounding, adding, and subtracting decimals. For our next unit, we will continue to build our knowledge of adding/subtracting decimals and reinforce the use of number lines and ratio tables as great math strategies.
In Science, we are wrapping up our chemical reaction unit by focusing on bases, acids, and the differences between physical and chemical reactions.
For Social Studies, we are concluding our studies of the American Revolution through project-based learning. Students are working with non-fiction text, biographies, and utilizing timelines.
For ELA, students have wrapped up informational writing and are heading toward narrative writing with a focus on entertaining beginnings.
