As we move into the eighth week of the school year, I’d like to take a moment to emphasize that safety remains our number one concern—both for students and staff. One key element that makes our schools safe is the focus we place on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). SEL helps build strong relationships, emotional awareness, and resilience in our students, creating environments where everyone can thrive. It’s these skills that not only make our schools safe, but also contribute to the positive culture we continually strive for across the district.
Our teachers are at the heart of this work, and their voices are crucial in shaping the way we approach safety, learning, and overall student well-being. We rely on their insights, and their contributions are essential in maintaining the strength of our district.
Last week, I had the privilege of attending The New England Association of School Superintendents (NEASS) Fall Annual Conference in Westbrook, Connecticut. NEASS is a unifying leadership association composed of school leaders from six New England state superintendent associations. At the conference, I had the opportunity to connect with colleagues who are strong advocates for public education and deeply understand the vital role that public schools play in shaping the future of our society. It was a reminder of how important it is to continue advocating for the resources and support necessary to sustain public schools as the cornerstones of our communities.
As always, I encourage you to stay connected with all the activities happening throughout Maple Run. Whether it’s through events, classroom visits, or your ongoing engagement, your involvement is key to the continued success of our students.
Thank you for your unwavering support as we work together to ensure a safe and positive learning environment for all. Let’s continue this great work into the week ahead!
Maple Run Celebrations
Judy Magnan, Fairfield Center School
In this week’s spotlight, we are thrilled to introduce Judy Magnan, the heart and soul of Fairfield Center School. As an Administrative Assistant, Judy keeps the school running smoothly and is always ready to offer a listening ear—or a piece of candy—to students who drop by her office. Known for her kindness and generosity, Judy goes above and beyond to support her school and community, embodying the true spirit of service.
Judy’s journey with Maple Run began as a substitute teacher, and she later transitioned to working as a paraeducator before finding her place in the front office at Fairfield Center School. In 2022, Judy received the Maple Run Superintendent Award, a testament to her unwavering commitment to students, staff, and families. That same year, she was honored as one of WOKO's 20 Outstanding Women, in partnership with Hannaford Supermarkets, recognizing her incredible impact on the community.
But Judy’s contributions don’t stop at school. A dedicated crafter, she’s known for making cozy blankets and sewing over 2,000 masks during COVID to help keep her community safe. Judy also volunteers at her son’s hockey games and for local nonprofits, generously giving her time wherever it’s needed.
Outside of work, Judy finds joy in spending time with her two teenage boys and takes pride in continuing a family tradition by competing in the Vermont Maple Festival’s Cooking Contest—where she’s been crowned Vermont’s Best Maple Cook and has won multiple blue ribbons!
Despite balancing two full-time jobs and the demands of a busy household, Judy never shows stress, always greeting the world with a smile and a giving spirit. She is truly an inspiration to all of us at Maple Run, and we are so grateful to have her as part of our community.
Thank you, Judy, for all that you do!
Wellness Tip of the Week: Volunteer
This week's wellness tip is all about the benefits of volunteering—a powerful way to boost both personal well-being and a sense of community.
Volunteering not only fosters strong social connections but also provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Doing things for others can bring feelings of joy and engagement, which contribute to overall mental health.
Health Benefits of Volunteering include:
- Lowering blood pressure
- Reducing stress levels
- Increasing life span
- Boosting “happy” hormones like endorphins, which improve mood and well-being
At work, volunteering can be a wonderful opportunity for team bonding. Group volunteer events can bring colleagues together for a shared cause, while balancing volunteer efforts with work can improve productivity, reduce burnout, and even increase overall wellness.
It’s important to approach volunteering as something that brings you joy and refills your cup rather than feeling like an added task. Even small acts of volunteering can have a big impact, both on your community and your personal well-being.
Take some time this week to reflect on how you can make space for volunteering—whether that’s lending a hand at a local event or supporting a cause close to your heart. You may find that giving back not only strengthens your community but also leaves you feeling happier and more fulfilled.
Celebrating Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Across Maple Run Schools
This week, we are excited to highlight the wonderful Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) celebrations happening across our district, showcasing the incredible ways our schools are fostering kindness, community, and connection.
At Saint Albans Town Educational Center (SATEC), students have been enjoying DJ Recess Celebrations, where music and fun bring everyone together for a high-energy break from the classroom. Throughout October, SATEC students have also been adding to their kindness wall, a beautiful display in the main hallway that reminds everyone of the power of kind words and actions.
Saint Albans City School has also embraced the spirit of kindness with their "Be The I in Kind" wall, a vibrant and uplifting addition at the entrance of the school. This display encourages students and staff to make kindness a personal commitment, with each person playing a part in creating a positive school community.
At Fairfield Center School, 7th and 8th grade students celebrated autumn in style with a special event on Wednesday. The afternoon fun began with a lunch, followed by face painting, games, and a cozy bonfire complete with s'mores (a big thank you to the Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department for their help!). The celebration ended with a fun, competitive game of volleyball between students and teachers—a great way to build connections and enjoy some friendly competition!
SEL is such an important part of learning for all of our students, from preschool to 12th grade. It helps foster a sense of belonging, empathy, and resilience, and we are proud to see these meaningful celebrations taking place across all our campuses.
Thank you to our schools for continuing to make SEL a priority in both big and small ways!
Indigenous Peoples' Day
In recognition of Indigenous Peoples' Day, we want to take a moment to express our deep gratitude to Dr. Jeff Benay for his unwavering dedication to Indian education in our community. As Director of Indian Education for Franklin County Public Schools, Jeff has worked tirelessly for decades to ensure that the rich culture, history, and contributions of the Abenaki Nation and other Indigenous peoples are not only honored but woven into the fabric of our schools.
Through his leadership, countless students, educators, and families have gained a deeper understanding of Native heritage, fostering respect, inclusion, and pride. Jeff’s work has helped bridge cultural gaps and build meaningful connections, allowing us all to grow together as a stronger, more united community. We are profoundly thankful for everything Jeff has done—and continues to do— to make our schools and community a better place for everyone. Today, and every day, we celebrate his remarkable impact.
