District Monthly Update
March 2024, Waltham Public Schools
Student Opportunity Act Forum Thursday, March 7
Waltham Public Schools community members: Educators, staff, families and students are invited to participate in our forum to learn more about our three year plan and seek your feedback related to the Massachusetts Student Opportunity Act. The Student Opportunity Act calls for every district and charter school in the state to develop 3-year plans, referred to as SOA plans. Districts' plans identify where data reveals disparities in student learning opportunities and outcomes for the student groups they serve and describe how they will utilize evidence-based approaches and strategies to address those disparities.
Please REGISTER HERE by Monday, March 4 if you need language interpreting services.

WALTHAM PUBLIC SCHOOLS DISTRICT & SCHOOL DESE REPORT CARDS
Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school and district’s report cards are designed to show families how our district and schools are doing in different areas. The report card includes multiple measures of performance – more than just MCAS scores. They represent a new way of looking at district and school performance, by providing information on student achievement, teacher qualifications, student learning opportunities, and more. WPS school report cards can be found on each school's website under the "ABOUT US" menu bar. The WPS District report card can also be located on our District Website under the "ABOUT US" menu bar.
Please feel free to reach out to your child's principal if you have any questions.
IN OUR SCHOOLS
STATEMENT ON SUPPORTING LGBTQ+ STUDENTS
We are saddened by the recent death of a high school student, Nex Benedict, in Oklahoma. This story has received national attention. While many facts of the case are still pending, we do know that Nex and other students felt bullied or harassed due to their gender identity and that Nex was in an altercation in a bathroom the day before their death.
As a reminder, the Waltham Public Schools community condemns all acts of harm and/or bullying, and it is our responsibility to ensure our schools are spaces of safety, care and belonging. All students are welcomed, and should be able to expect a duty of care and a safe learning environment that is identity affirming. All of our school buildings have at least one (or multiple) gender neutral bathroom(s).
If any student or family has any concerns or questions, they should contact their School Adjustment Counselor or building administrator(s).

MCDEVITT LEARNING EVENTS
McDevitt welcomed the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Sparks Photonics Foundation (and a McDevitt parent) Kevin McComber to speak with our 6th graders about waves, photonics, and semiconductors. Students asked questions as varied as "Does your company deal with quantum mechanics?" to "What kind of salary can I make in a photonics job?" Thank you to Mr. McComber for his participation in this exciting learning opportunity for our students!
Additionally, all McDevitt 8th Graders visited the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the US Senate on the campus of UMASS Boston to experientially learn the many facets of the legislative process and government.

Come and join us for “Strides for Education,” a fun-filled family day on Moody Street on May 5th! This race event is being organized to support the Waltham Education and Beyond Foundation (WEBF), which is committed to helping educators by awarding grants that introduce new and innovative programs to the students of Waltham Public Schools. WEBF-funded grants over the past 17 years have included the "One School, One Story" program at Waltham High School, Model UN programs in our middle schools, Honors Band and Chorus programs throughout the district, and the establishment of the Robohawks robotics team. This school year, WEBF has funded a variety of projects, which include heart monitors for physical education classes, SNAP circuit and Roots robot kits for classrooms, and solar eclipse glasses for all elementary schools.
