Presentations/Reports
District Odyssey of the Mind Teams
- Teresa Fulk shared that Wayland Union had four teams representing five of our six buildings within the district. Three of those teams will be attending the state competition this weekend.
Report from Curriculum and Technology Committee Meeting
- Pete Zondervan shared that the meeting covered course proposals, including having yearbook as a class and realigning the high school language arts program. Technology based conversations included ordering the final pieces to add WiFi to the busses and improving lockdown safety for students.

Student Board Members Report
- Ava Makowski and Matthew Chubb shared that the high school is in the final trimester for the school year and spring sports began on Monday, March 11th. NHS students are traveling to elementary buildings this week to read to classes in honor of reading month. Theater was able to hold a student directed play this past weekend. ECO club recently raised $100 after their wear it again fundraiser. Girls Basketball fell short in the district finals last week. Winter guard has a competition this Saturday with Varsity competing and JV performing as an exhibition. Boys Swim and Dive competed in the state competition this past weekend.
Governance Team Good News
- Janel Hott shared that her daughter and son-in-law are being stationed back in the states. Theresa Dobry shared that her daughter was accepted into the MRI program at GRCC, she will be starting the program in May. Ava Makowski shared that she's decided to attend U of M to study medicine with the goal of becoming a surgeon.

Administration Reports
Assistant Superintendent of Finance & Operations
- Leslie Wagner shared the expenditure and revenue report. As a whole, we are looking to end the year with a 21% fund balance which is right on track with the district's strategic plan goals. Roofs are being replaced due to damage from the hail storm that occurred last year, all the roofs are being upgraded to 80 mill roofs. About 15,000 breakfasts and 41,000 lunches were served in the month of February. Adding turf to the soccer field is expected to begin in April.
Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services
- Teresa Fulk shared that the district had their final PD day for the school year on Monday, March 11th. Spring assessments will begin as soon as we come back from spring break.

New Business - Discussion Items
Bus Purchase
- In general, the district purchases 2 new busses a year. Each bus is currently priced at $137,906. This is a purchase for next school year.
Annual SBLF Borrowing for Debt Payments
- Leslie Wagner shared that the district is waiting for tax checks to finish coming in before deciding if the district needs to borrow. The district is close to not needing to borrow to meet our financial obligations this year.
High School Course Proposals for 2024-2025 School Year
- Teresa Fulk shared that the courses being proposed are yearbook and a realignment of high school language arts. The updated course proposal would require all students to pass English 9, then for 10th-12th grades students can choose a topic that interests them while still covering the same standards regardless of the course chosen.

Board Member Topics
Pete Zondervan shared that he wasn't able to get to the athletic committee meeting, but was wondering if the district could look into helmets to help protect the crown of our wrestlers heads. He would also like to see consistency with branding in athletic uniforms as we continue to invest in our athletic programs.
Norman Taylor would like to thank the OM coaches for all that they do and wishes them good luck in their state competition this weekend.
Jeff Koon shared that it was fun to see the district busy last Thursday by hosting districts for girls basketball.
Janel Hott gave a shout out to Ava after witnessing her play basketball. She's also excited that spring is here.
Theresa Dobry thanked everyone for attending the meeting and she appreciated the student board members giving their input throughout the meeting.
Becky Hohnke, Dan Cassini, and Tim Reeves were absent for the meeting.
