SIS October News Fall 23
We Are Solon Strong!
A Note from the Principal
What a great week we had celebrating Homecoming! Students showed their school spirit throughout the week and we enjoyed seeing what each day brought!
We are excited to be entering into October. This means our beginning of the year assessments are finally complete and we can really start digging into our instructional content and getting to know kids even better! It's also nice that routines and procedures are established and teachers and students alike are getting more and more comfortable with one another. As we approach this season, we are grateful for your support from home to help students prepare for their academic days be that ensuring a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast, or encouragement to keep reading, keep trying, and keep growing! Truly, thank you for your partnership from home!
As we get into the year, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- If your child is going to be absent, please email his/her homeroom teacher and our office, at sisoffice@solon.k12.ia.us. Emailing the office is critically important, especially for changes in end of day routines for kids. Teachers are often unable to check emails until after students leave for the day. Emailing both the classroom teacher and the office helps make sure the message is received and passed along.
- As the weather turns colder, please consider writing your child's name inside his/her coats and/or sweatshirts. Our lost and found is growing and will continue to do so. If we can locate a name we can help get items back to their rightful owner.
- Please take a moment to review our school handbook, particularly as it relates to our cell phone and smart watch policies. We have been reminding more students about the policy this year than in previous years, particularly with smart watches. The policy as written requires that all phones/smart watches/gizmos and other communication devices be silenced or off in bags throughout the school day. If there is a distraction of any kind, the student will be asked to report to the principal's office with the device. The parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up the device. While we understand that parents may reach out to students about end of day changes, it is important that these changes are communicated with our office so that we know any changes are requested by the parent, otherwise, students are expected to follow regular dismissal arrangements.
- As students are getting more comfortable with SIS and we get into the year, we are finding more and more students are being picked up, dropped off, walking, and/or riding their bike to school. Please keep in mind that for student safety, all students arriving to school by any means other than the school bus should enter through the front of the building. Walkers and bike riders should utilize the West 5th Street sidewalk upon entry and should avoid cutting through the community center parking lot as this is the route bus drivers use.
Happy Fall, Y'all!

September School-Wide Celebrations of Respect
We wrapped up the month at our school-wide assembly on Thurs., Sept. 28 with a little video on how respect makes us feel, shared how 4B kept track of their respectful behavior all month, celebrated our SIS Stand Out Students of the month, and then classes competed for the Orange Chair! The first class to solve our respect themed Wordle won! Mrs. Walden's class was the first to solve it. The word was VALUE. Congrats, 4C!
Take a peek at our Stand Out Students and Orange Chair winners below and then take a peek at what's to come in October when we focus on responsibility!
