Mrs. Rice's Reflection
Happy Friday, Riverside Families! I hope you had a great Spring Break with your children.
The end of the year comes so fast after Spring Break, so please take note of the important events below. We have a lot of exciting things happening during the next 8 weeks of school.
M-STEP Testing at Riverside
We will begin M-STEP testing for our 3rd and 4th grade students next week, and testing will continue through the end of April. At the elementary level, we test for only part of the day to help students build stamina and confidence in these important testing environments, which they will continue to experience throughout their school years.
Why Are State Assessments Important?
Each year, all students in Michigan participate in a state assessment. This is the M-STEP general assessment.
These assessments serve several important purposes:
They provide a snapshot of student achievement at the state, district, and school level.
They give parents valuable information about their child’s academic progress.
They help teachers and schools identify trends and adjust instruction to meet student needs.
How Can You Help Your Child Succeed?
The best support you can give your child is making sure they:Get a good night's sleep
Eat a healthy breakfast
Arrive at school on time, every day
Thank you for encouraging your child to take the test seriously and do their very best!
Announcement for 3rd and 4th Grade Families
Please send a pair of headphones to school with your child. These are needed for students to use Exact Path on their Chromebooks, which helps build their reading and math skills in preparation for the M-STEP.
Affordable options can be found at the Dollar Store in Battle Creek for just $1–$3. Students will keep these headphones at school and use them again during M-STEP testing.
Thank you for your support!

Intervention Information
Making reading interactive is a wonderful way to ensure students are not only enjoying their learning but also engaged, which is the most successful way to foster the love of literacy and as well as promote growth. Getting the students outside while working on their skills is a great opportunity, below are some simple activities that can be done daily and adjusted to meet the needs of your student:
1. ABC/Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt
Go on an alphabet/vocabulary scavenger hunt. Search the neighborhood for things that begin with each letter of the alphabet. A-alley, B-bark on a tree, C-cumulus clouds, D– dog, and so on.
2.Read and write outside
On the next pleasant day, why not find a cozy spot outside and unwind with a good book. Maybe you could even do this after a walk to your nearest library for some new reads. Or, you might even try taking your journal outside and do some writing.
3. Create Stationery
Gather some art supplies (cardstock or heavy construction paper, crayons, paint and a clipboard) and head outdoors. Create stationery (cards and letter writing paper) to send to friends and family. You could do a crayon rubbing of tree bark or paint a scene of your backyard. Stay outside or head back indoors to write a letter or card to someone special.
4. Sight Word Hide and Seek
Write sight words or vocabulary words on individual cards. Hide them throughout the yard or playground. Now you are ready to seek them out. Have someone call out a word and then try to find the hidden word.*

Nurse Wolff Update
The end of the school year is quickly approaching. This is the perfect time to review what is necessary to attend school in the Fall. Per state vaccination laws, students must meet the minimum standard to help prevent disease outbreaks in the school settings. The attachment lists what vaccinations are required and recommended time frame for initial vaccination and boosters for various ages.
Parents and guardians can choose to decline vaccines but must obtain a certified non-medical waiver from a local health department.
See "Immunization Waiver Information" at https://www.calhouncountymi.gov/departments/public_health_department/seeking_care.php.
Please call 269-969-6363 to schedule an appointment after completing the online education.
Help protect our children today and immunize them!
