The Lion's Roar
AUGUST 2024
To our incoming 6th grade and new families “welcome”! To our returning 7th and 8th grade families “welcome back”! The 2024-2025 school year is right around the corner. We are excited about the opportunities your student will have to be challenged and excel in the classroom, on the field, in the gym, and on the stage this year at Oak Hills. Please note a few important items below. We are looking forward to seeing the students at schedule pickup and then August 15th for the first day of the 2024-2025 school year!

Schedule Pick-Up Q & A
Q- What is schedule pick-up?
A - Schedule pick-up is a time where students will receive their class schedule for the upcoming school year, be able to walk the campus to see where classes are located, drop off shot records if needed, check bus information and hopefully see a few friends along the way.
Q- What if I can’t be there on August 1st?
A - You can still pick up your student’s schedule any work day after schedule pick-up day between 8a.m-3p.m. in the front office. Students are not required to pick up their schedule prior to the start of the school year. This is purely an optional event as all students will receive an updated schedule on the first day of school. Students will not be allowed to walk the building after August 1st schedule pick up.
Q- Is there anything we need to do before arriving the day of schedule pick-up?
A – Yes. All student information will need to be updated in the new Skyward Family Access portal. If you are having difficulty with updating this information, we will have computer labs available on campus and can help walk you through the process.
Q – Do we need to bring anything?
A- The short answer is no. However, if your student is going into 7th grade shot records will need to be updated for the upcoming year. If that has not been done, you may bring those and turn those into the nurse at schedule pick up.
Any other questions you may reach out to the campus at 936-276-4402. Be looking for another email in the coming weeks with more information about back to school.
Meet the Teacher is August 27th at 5:30. Parents will follow a bell schedule and use their student’s class schedule to navigate the halls. Please take a picture of or have a copy of your student’s schedule for reference. A bell schedule for the evening is below. We are asking only parents to attend as seating is limited in the classrooms. The parking lot and doors between Keenan Elementary and Oak Hills will be open. More than likely, parking will be tight so please make arrangements to get here a few minutes early.
Returning Student Registration Forms
All returning students to MISD will need to update registration information for the 2023-2024 school year in Skyward. Use the Skyward Link to update returning student info.

Transportation
Student Bus Route - SMART Tag
To find your student’s bus route, click on the SMART Tag link which will take you the MISD transportation website where you can get all the information needed for the SMART Tag registration. You will have to create an account if this is the first time to use the app. For new students to the district, please allow 48 hours after your student has been registered before using the app. The system does not automatically populate student routes at registration and this will allow time for the system to add your student’s route. If you have questions about your student’s transportation you may contact our district transportation office at 936-276-2300.
STUDENT ID BADGES
The district has implemented the SMART tag system.. This is included with every student ID Badge. This is also utilized for our students who ride the bus. Every student will have his/her ID badge scanned when they load the bus in the morning and afternoon. This system will allow transportation to be able to identify in a timely manner our students who are on the bus in the mornings and afternoons and will be a huge move in the right direction for our student’s safety. With that, it is extremely important that students have their badge with them every day at school. Please help us in making sure that your student keeps his/her badge in a common location i.e. backpack, night stand, shoes, etc. in an effort to ensure they have their ID with them everyday.
A couple of changes from last year to this year:
LOCKERS – we will not be issuing/using student lockers in the hallway this year.
WATER BOTTLES - student water bottles will need to have a twist on lid that does not include the use of a straw. We had quite a few spills in the hallways and stains on the carpet and we are hoping that this will help alleviate some of those from occurring this year.
HB114: NEW VAPE LEGISLATION PASSED
Vaping continues to be a challenge for all schools in the region and state. Changes in legislation last year require a MANDATORY DAEP PLACEMENT if a student:
Sells, gives, or delivers to another person or possesses or uses an e-cigarette or similar vape device per our MISD code of conduct.
We ask you have conversations with your student about vaping and the subsequent disciplinary actions that will result if a student uses or is in possession of a vape while on school grounds.
THE COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Counselor's Corner
We are excited to welcome you all back from summer break and hope to see you at the designated schedule pick-ups. Here are a few important things to note about schedules. All schedules are subject to changes prior to the first day of school. All students will receive a new schedule on the first day of school, reflecting any changes that have been made. Schedule changes before the start of the school year will be considered for the following issues:
*Incorrect number of class periods
*Duplicate courses listed
*Course scheduled that was previously taken and passed
If you have any questions or concerns related to your schedule, please contact your grade level counselor.
