Have you applied/reapplied for Free and Reduced Priced Meals?
Free or reduced-price meals are available to students based on household size and income. If income falls below the amount listed below for household size, then students living within the household may qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Students are automatically eligible for free meals if the family receives assistance under the Food Supplement Program or Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) benefits.
Changes and/or status changes occur every year. This year there will be a price category change as of October 11, 2023. Please be sure to apply or reapply in the event your price category is affected by this change.

Attendance
Please note we have implemented a Google form for submission of absences/late arrivals and notes. This form is the only acceptable method of communication and must be utilized for reporting absences/late arrivals and uploading doctor/medical notes ONLY for your student(s). With the exception of COVID reporting in which an email in addition to the absence form must be sent to Nurse Ann, Dr. Fryson and Mrs. Virgil.

ABSENT NOTE SUBMISSION: Please complete this form within three (3) days once your child returns to instruction. Excused absences cannot be placed into SchoolMax until AFTER the child returns to instruction. Family vacations and trips are not considered excused absences. Refer to the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook for further clarification regarding excused and unexcused absences.

Nurse Updates
Nurse Ann and the School Health Services strongly recommend wearing a mask and keeping one available in your child's backpack.
Please help yourself and others -- keep your scholars home when they are not well.
Immunizations
Immunizations must be up-to-date and received by the school nurse to prevent exclusion from school.
Medication forms are attached. Please hand carry newly prescribed medication in the pharmacy packaging. Any adult may deliver the medication to the nurse. (appointments must be made)

Kindergarten
Kind Kindergarten News!
Hello Kindergarten Families:
ELA: We will work on short “u” and long “u” sounds. We will review nouns and how we use them in a sentence, and the correct punctuation at the end of a sentence.
Social Studies:We will learn about people in history.
Math: We are starting a step up to first grade, facts with five on a ten frame, add in any order, add in three numbers.
Science: We will be reviewing plant life, how to help plants grow in good soil, sunlight, and water.
Our kindergarten promotion ceremony will be on Thursday, June 6, 2024.
Ms. Thornton and Ms. Shulman’s classes will begin at 8:30am and Ms. Lewis and Ms. Major’s classes will begin at 11:30am. All scholars will receive three tickets, we are unable to provide more than three tickets per scholar due to the limited space.
*Friendly reminder: If your scholar is not feeling well, please keep them home. They should not be in school with a fever, a constant runny nose, or a cough that disrupts their ability to focus and concentrate on their lessons.

Spectacular Second Grade News!
Next week in ELA, we will complete Unit 4, Making a Difference. Our spelling pattern for the week is consonant patterns kn, wr, gn, mb, and Il. In Math, we will take topic 13 assessment and begin topic 15, Graphs and Data. In Science, we will begin topic 6, Habitats. In Social Studies, we will continue Chapter 6, Our American Culture. As always, please ensure your scholar reads every night.
Please reinforce the importance of following our School Motto with your scholars. I will Respect Myself and Others, I will Opt to Be Scholarly, I will Act Responsibly, and I will React with Kindness.
Testing season is approaching, marking the final stretch of the school year. We kindly request that you ensure your scholar arrives at school punctually and is present unless they are sick.

Third Grade
Terrific Third Grade News!
In Reading, this week students will be taking the MCAP Reading Test. Please make sure students arrive to school on time!
In Social Studies, students will continue to review Chapter 6 lessons 2 and 3.
In Math, scholars are finished with Math MCAP, on to Reading! We will finish the unit on time, volume, and mass.
In Science, we are still working on adaptations that help groups of organisms survive.
There will be no homework due to MCAP Testing this week.

Weekly News!
This is a friendly reminder that MCAP testing will continue on Monday, May 6. Students will be taking the ELA Test. We encourage all students to be in their classrooms by 7:55 a.m. each testing day.
Prompt arrival is crucial to ensure a smooth testing experience for all students. Students who arrive late will not be able to take the test with their class and may need to be scheduled for a make-up session later in the day.
To optimize test performance, we recommend ensuring your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast on testing days.

Tigers! Tigers! What a week! We completed our MCAP mathematics testing and you persevered effortlessly! We are incredibly proud of you, Tigers! Keep up the good work!
MCAP
Next week, we will migrate into the MCAP reading portion of testing and we know you will excel greatly. Be encouraged and use the skills that have been taught all year to your full advantage! You got this! Take your time and do well. Each day this week will be an A day due to testing. Eat a well balanced breakfast and get plenty of rest. Be in attendance daily and on time. Camp Schmidt
Camp Schmidt will be May 28-29. The permission slips have been distributed and you will receive an invite to join an informational Zoom meeting. The date for this session is forthcoming. You will receive a list of the items that your scholar will need to be successful on the trip. Please adhere to the list and ensure your scholar is prepared. Thank you so much for your support! We also need donations! Donations for the trip is vital for the success of the trip. Ms. McVeigh sent a link for donations in the DOJO announcements. Please use the link for inquiry. Kings Dominion
Kings Dominion is coming up shortly. Permissions slips have been submitted to Ms. Carter and payments are to be received through MySchoolBucks if you haven't done so already. We will explore this trip on May 17, 2024 at 8:00 am. Please be on time when arriving to school. We will leave promptly at 8:00. Thank you for your continual support.
SUBJECT CONTENT:
RELA
We will continue to explore "Delivering Justice" and use the reading skills of "generating questions and explaining relationships between ideas". Our Word Study: Teach Word Origins of -graph -micro and -tele in the Greek and Latin origin.
Math
Students will continue to work on numerical patterns in math.
Social Studies
Students will take the Unit 7 Assessment this week and begin Unit 8 Westward Expansion. MCAP testing will continue next week for READING.
Science
Students will continue to recognize that many stars are as big as the sun, they will explain how the apparent brightness of stars is related to their distances from Earth.

Greetings,
Tigers have studio time this week. Classes will primarily consist of independent work to plan and work on their projects. Projects include portraits, still life, architecture, and other activities that develop their understanding of shapes and value in 3D images. We will continue to stress planning and craftsmanship.

Keyboarding: Locate and Type Numbers
The learners receive direct instruction and practice in keyboarding numbers 0 through 9 as they locate and type numbers, learn the relationship between the numbers on the keyboard and the screen, strengthen counting skills, and reinforce basic shape recognition in this engaging and interactive digital lesson.

Software Fundamentals: Software and File Formats
The learners receive direct instruction and practice with software programs and file formats as they identify software groups, select task-appropriate software, start and exit software programs, and create, name, save, print, and close files in this engaging and interactive digital lesson.
PE
Good week, this week we are practicing our basketball dribbling skills, so please make sure your scholar has proper athletic shoes, and water as the weather is getting warmer.

STEM I LEGO
This week, students will make adjustments and modifications to last week's creations to improve their designs.
STEM II
Greetings,
K-2 will be learning about the life cycle of the butterfly. Their STEM challenge will be to create a butterfly that can stay on their finger like the Monarch butterfly in the book Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly.
3rd grade will continue our lessons on coding. This week our lesson was on sequencing, Their challenge was to develop a coding sequence to get Ms. Carter out of the door of the classroom. It was more challenging than they thought but they had a lot of fun doing it!
4th grade is continuing their lesson on sending messages. Their challenge is to get a message to another group across the room without using light or sound and without disturbing or alerting the other groups.
5th grade is continuing our lesson on the solar system. This week we did some research on the different planets using a really cool resource where they could manipulate the objects in our solar system to see different aspects of them.
