Klondike 2023
What is the Klondike?
In 1896, the discovery of gold near the Klondike River in Alaska by Skookum Jim and his family set off a series of events that led to the Klondike Gold Rush. Hundreds of thousands of men set out on boats and voyaged to Alaska in pursuit of gold. To reach Alaska several routes were used. First, wealthy individuals used to board boats to sail around Alaska from big west portside cities, which was easy but expensive. People tried hiking to the spot with large groups of people with sleds, but would often be faced with conflicts. Lastly, people tried to travel through the glaciers where many were lost and went snow-blind.

What is the Klondike Derby?
The Klondike Derby is an event hosted by The Boy Scouts of America. Troops have competitions where they participate in various events and accumulate points. The group with the highest amount of points in the end wins! No matter if we win or not as Troop 89 we get Klondike Bars at the end.
Eagle Scout Experience
Varun I.'s words goes as followed: "
My experiences as a boy scout have been long, yet extremely fruitful. Many of the trips I went to shaped my perspective on Scouting. It has taught me to abide by the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, as well as doing my duty to god. Prior to my scouting journey, I always believed that doing my duty to god meant praying to god everyday and believing in god. But now, I learned that doing my duty to god meant not only keeping my faith in god, but also doing duty to others. There are a few lessons that scouting has taught me that I want everybody to take away.
It is alright to make mistakes! Boy Scouts is an environment built for everybody to learn. It is natural for every scout to make at least a few mistakes in their journey. What is essential is to learn from your mistakes and come out the other side as a better person.
Always remain confident and certain in your everyday life. Whenever you are about to go through with an idea or plan, always be prepared and trust that you are making the right choice.
One of the key tenets of Boy Scouts is always to have a plan b. Whenever you are tasked with completing a project for your manager in your future job, always have a backup plan in case your original plan doesn’t go accordingly.
Most importantly, remember the experiences that Boy Scouts have given you and use it to live your life to the fullest. It is not always about the destination, but the journey itself. Thank you, everybody! "
Varun,
You have been a great elder Scout to me and definitely earn the title of Eagle Scout. I hope you succeed in your future endeavors.
YIS,
Yatharth
Congrats Varun!
Fun Times!
An Award for Dad!
New PLC Roster
What is the PLC and why is it so important?
These individuals are very important to keep our troops running because they all have different duties they have to live up to. One duty they all have is to see the promise of Scouting delivered.
Senior Patrol Leader
The SPL is the prominent Scout leader of the troop and makes sure everyone does what they are supposed to do.
Assistant Patrol Leader
The ASPL assists the SPL in multiple ways. For example, if the SPL is absent the ASPL will take over their position.
Wolves Patrol Leader
The Wolves Patrol Leader leads the wolf patrol. They will have patrol meetings together and have fun.
Shark Patrol Leader
The Shark Patrol leaders lead the Shark Patrol. They will also have patrol meetings together and have fun.
Outdoor Ethics Guide
The Outdoor Ethics Guide is very impactful to the troop. For instance, they are to lead at least two or more road cleanups. Also, they are in charge of patrolling campsites when leaving.
Quarter Master
The role of the Quartermaster is very important. They have to make sure kids return the gear they are given to clean. In fact, the Quartermaster, Prajwal, has implemented a fee of $5 if the gear is not returned on time.
Scribe
The Scribe writes the announcements of Scouts and Adults at regular troop and PLC meetings.
Troop Guide
The Troop Guide serves as a mentor to younger Scouts hoping for them to succeed.
Instructor
While Troop Guide and Instructor may have similar names the work each has to do is completely different. The Instructor instead of teaching younger Scouts has to teach the entire troop useful life skills like knots.
Webmaster
The Webmaster is the head of our online website. They have many duties which include: Sending out Photo Albums of Trips, keeping the Troop 89 website up to date, and lastly attaching new Scouts to our email chain.
Historian
The Troop Historian is to write a newsletter at least every other month. What you are reading now is a newsletter.
Bugler
The Bugler is to play the brass instrument signaling the start and end of events and meetings.
Librarian
Rohan S. is our new Librarian.
The Librarian oversees the care of the Troop's books and Merit badge pamphlets.
Approaching Trips - Trap Pond
Here are some trips you should be very excited about.
On the weekend of August 18 - 20, we are traveling to Trap Pond led by Andrew T. Trap Pond State Park Trip is located in Laurel, Delaware which is a 3hr 10 min drive from our firehouse. We will have lots of fun and do things like kayaking for about two hours. Also, we will have plenty of free time to do special requirements you don't normally get to do at meetings like shelter building.
Here are some key reminders about this trip -
- The age requirement is you have to be at least 12
- You need to have taken a BSA swim test
- And lastly have lots of FUN
Approaching Trips - Round Valley
I have been on this trip so here are some tips from me.
- Bring a reusable water bottle. It gets super hot and having a reliable water source is essential.
- Pack light. As mentioned above you need to carry your own weight. Ounces turn into pounds so you should be mindful when you pack. For example, a bag of clothes can be a pillow or a coat can be a blanket.
- It's important to always follow directions, regardless of who is giving them.
- As I said about the Trap Pond trip above have lots and lots of fun.
