2025 Spring Concert!
Monthly Update on Specials Classes
Art with Ms. Kim
Artists have been learning about texture and form, exploring these elements of art through clay.
- Kindergarten made clay pinch pots, using their hands to shape the clay into a pot, and glazed them. We also made texture prints using a variety of found objects and painted paper collages inspired by the illustrations of Eric Carle.
- 1st Grade made clay pinch pot monsters, starting with the pinch pot method they learned last year in Kindergarten. We created smaller details, such as eyes, teeth and horns, and scored them and used slip, a mixture of clay and water, to attach them on. They were fired and then we glazed them, using different colors to emphasize details, and they were fired again in the kiln.
- 2nd Grade is making animal face relief sculptures out of clay, starting with a slab. We added details, like eyes and ears, scored them and used slip, a mixture of clay and water, to attach them on. They will be fired and then we will glaze them, using different colors to emphasize different parts of the animal's face, and they will be fired again in the kiln.
- 3rd Grade made clay coil pots, shaping and rolling the clay using our hands and scoring and slipping 6 coils on top of the base. After they were fired, we glazed them and they were fired again.
- 4th Grade is making clay triangular coil pots, shaping and rolling the clay using our hands and scoring and slipping 3-5 coils on top of the base and also making a slab lid using relief techniques. After they are fired, we will glaze them using different colors to emphasize our design and they will be fired again.
- 5th Grade is making an independent clay project, choosing either a flat relief, pinch pot, coil pot or slab box construction. We came up with multiple design ideas, chose one and are creating our work using the techniques connected to the format we chose. We will glaze our work after it is fired, using different colors to emphasize our design, and they will be fired again.

Physical Education with Mrs. Bartlett & Mrs. Fitzgerald
This past month students have been learning about one of the fastest growing sports in the country, Pickleball! We also reviewed nutrition with all grade levels!
Students in grades 3-5, have been introduced/reviewed the game of Pickleball! Students have been working on paddle skills, rallying (hitting the ball back and forth with a bounce), the serve, and keeping score during a modified game in class! Students were also taught the rules of the game, where to hit the ball, as well as, the service rotation during the game. The students really enjoyed the modified games and were very excited about playing and helping each other learn the game.
Next up was Nutrition! Students in grades 3-5, started by reviewing the food groups and what foods are in each food group. We then introduced them to what a balanced plate looks like (one food from each group). We incorporated all of these skills into relay and group based activities. Students had a blast with these! Throughout this unit, we talked to the students about food choices and not to deprive themselves of anything. We wanted to give them skills so they are able to make food choices for themselves in the future.
Our K-2 students started to explore the pickle ball skills by beginning to demonstrate how to hit a ball with a paddle. They experimented with hitting the ball and/or balloon at low, medium and high levels, as well as, what force you need to use in different situations. They started with working on these skills individually and then some progressed to rallying with a partner! It was a great start in introducing skills that the students will be able to use in different activities in the future.
In grades K-2, we started to unit with food recognition! We wanted the students to identify food, so they were able to know the foods and then be able to identify what food group they belong to! The kids had a great time participating in movement activities that reinforced these concepts. We even moved on to talking about a balanced plate with some of the classes.
Here is a summary of the skills we have been working on this month!

Spanish with Sra. Navas, Sra. Olafsson, & Sra. Bogdanovic
¡Feliz mayo!
Kindergarten: Kindergarteners have finished our clothing unit and are now learning about how to talk about families in Spanish. Students love singing along and doing the actions for family members with this video. Have your child sing it for you (we only watched part of the video in class).
First grade: We are working on wrapping up our unit on hobbies and emotions. For our end of unit projects students are drawing pictures about hobbies that they like and talking about how they feel when they do these hobbies.
Second grade: We have finished or are finishing up our unit on the house and chores and will be starting/have started our rainforest unit. Students have fun learning about animals that live in the rainforest and the things they can see and hear in the rainforest.
Third grade: Third graders have been working on community members and places in their community, for example, “El maestro trabaja en la escuela/ The teacher works in the school.” Students have been practicing Spanish by reading with leveled books about community.
Fourth grade: Students have been working on a group project in which they are researching a famous house in the Spanish-speaking world, creating a presentation and presenting it to the class. Some classes have already finished presenting! See their pictures below!
Fifth grade: Students are getting ready for the AAPPL test which will be on either May 22nd or 23rd depending on their class schedule. The test is to assess their listening and speaking skills in Spanish. We will soon be wrapping up our unit about health during which students have talked about the healthy activities, habits and foods that they like. We have also recently talked about language options for 6th grade next year. Important*** If you have not already, please visit this link to take the survey to select your child’s language option for next year. If it is not completed, middle school administration will be forced to make the decision for you of which language your child will be studying for the next three years.
