Rocking Rollercoasters
Challenge: Use pool noodles and duct tape to make a rollercoaster with two loopty-loops and a sharp turn. Fifth graders used the engineering process to design and assemble their creations. The final test: Can a passenger (a marble) make it through the rollercoaster without falling out. In addition to the explorations, trial and error, and scientific thinking, an additional benefit was that kindergarten buddies used the roller coasters for some exploratory play!
MERSD Elementary Poetry Cafe Fosters Sharing and Appreciation
The first MERSD Elementary Poetry Cafe Night was a hit ! Over 35 students, staff and parents shared poems in an Open Mic format in the EES Cafe which was decorated by dynamic duo, EES parent Hayes Demeule and MMES parents Sarah Chamberlain. Many students shared multiple poems, solo and with friends. EES teachers Mrs. Demetri and Mrs. Field paired up for a poem and also shared poems solo. EES Parents Hayes Demeule, Betsy McKeen and Alison Ward jumped into share poems at the Open Mic as well. The event was emceed by Ms. Garafalo, a 4th grade teacher at MMES and Director of the 5th grade play. Miss Dooley provided background piano music at the event. A great time was had by all!
Spectacular Solar Stunner!
Take a rare phenomenon, add-in potential for some learning, and spread the joy throughout the community--that's what our recent solar eclipse felt like at EES. Before the event, classrooms explored models, watched scientific videos and created stylistic holders for their special eclipse glasses. On the day that the magic happened, classrooms stepped outside to look above as the moon began its move in front of the sun. Joining us on the playground for dismissal were friends and family alike! Many thanks go to the Gr 5 class for hosting our Solar Eclipse Viewing Party! There was no better way to view such a celestial display!
Silly Stories and Writing Inspiration by Josh Funk
Josh Funk met with our first graders, sharing stories of his early writings, and strategies for shifting an idea to a story. Students delighted in viewing several of his latest books. Many thanks to the Friends of EES for supporting this visit!
