Student of the Month for Courage
Cooperation is choosing what is helpful, right, and kind - even when it's hard or scary. We have an amazing group of students here at Sewell that display courage daily. Below are students nominated by their teacher, for Student of the Month for Courage.
Ms. Barraza: Prince came to our school as a new student towards the end of the second quarter. Immediately he demonstrated courage in stepping into a brand-new environment with an open heart and positive attitude to learn classroom routines, rules, and expectations. From day one and since, Prince has also shown courage in engaging himself in whole group classroom discussions and “pair-sharing” with classmates during “learning-rug time”. In addition, Prince continuously challenges and pushes himself to read CVC books with more and more ease and looks forward every day to taking part in his reading group session. We are so glad Prince is a part of our school, and we look forward to seeing the continued growth and impact he has as a student and friend.
Ms. Hanson: Moses, you've truly show what courage means. I love seeing you enjoy sitting on the rug, spending time with your classmates, and participating in class, especially during Math. Every moment you share with your classmates is something special. Moses, you are strong, brave, and capable of amazing things, and I'm so proud of everything you do!
Mrs. Alvarado-Wells: Congratulations to Annalee on earning this month's Character Strong award for Courage. Annalee you have grown from someone who would not speak up to someone who is now a confident first grader. You confidently show courage by choosing what is helpful, right, and kind and your new willingness to speak up in front of your peers. Your courageous choices and positive actions inspire others and help make our classroom a caring and respectful place! Congratulations on your achievement!
Ms. Dolan: Zoe shows courage by sharing her opinions and ideas in a kind and helpful way. She speaks from the heart, even when it is hard to translate the words she is thinking into English vocabulary. She sets an example of courage in communication – speaking and listening. Her decision to work hard to include all her classmates and help them understand her, inspires others to listen patiently and to share their thoughts courageously and kindly.
Ms. Ioannou: Kato shows courage every single day by bringing a bright smile to school, no matter what. Even when things are tough, he stays positive, kind, and keeps trying his best. His smile isn’t just for fun—it’s his way of being brave and spreading joy to others. Kato reminds us that courage doesn’t always mean doing something big and loud; sometimes it means showing up with a kind heart and a can-do attitude. He makes our classroom a happier place just by being himself!
Ms. Mendoza: I would like to recognize Raymond for the character trait of courage. Thank you for showing others that you can try new things even when it feels hard. You choose kindness when others might be acting unkind and this takes bravery. Thank you for inspiring others to have courage too!
Ms. Petrino: Berto has demonstrated the trait of Courage all year. He always stands up for what he believes in. He respectfully stands up for what he feels is correct and explains himself. He always stands behind what he believes and doesn’t go along with peer pressure. He is courageous when he always tries his best and never gives up. Keep it up, Berto!
Ms. Hook: Jameson shows courage all of the time. When he gets down or upset about something, he chooses to courageously gather himself and move forward with his day. He can solve a situation when he faces a difficulty without fear. Thank-you Jameson for being an example for others in the class.

OMA
OMA News for May
I am so incredibly proud of all of our OMA students who performed in our end spring concert. I appreciate everyone's patience and for Mrs. Gow for stepping in when I lost my voice. It was a wonderful evening and part of what makes Sewell so great. I also want to acknowledge our incredible OMA Honor Choir for working so hard to learn four new songs, make it to all Saturday rehearsals and for delivering a very powerful concert on Saturday May 3rd. I was incredibly proud.
We will be finishing up the year with musical games and art to send us off into the summer. I enjoy working with all of our Sewell students and will miss our 5th graders so much. Best of luck to all of them, they are so talented.
Here is the final art installation in the OMA hallway entitled: Inspiration from the Sewell Garden.
Best,
Mrs. Darling

Help Our Sewell Community
Support Our Community During Spring & Summer Cleaning!
As you tidy up during your spring or early summer cleaning, consider making a meaningful impact in our community:
📚 Donate Books: Help keep our book library fresh and full! You can place gently used books directly on the book rack or drop them off at the front office. We'll add them to the library as needed to keep it engaging for our readers.
đź‘• Clothing Donations Needed: Our health office is in need of gently used clothing for students who may need a change during the day or for families who could use a little extra support. Every donation helps us care for our community.
Thank you for helping us build a stronger, more supportive environment for everyone!
Family Engagement at Sewell
As we come to the close of another school year, I want to take a moment to thank you for your continued support and partnership. Our students thrive when schools and families work together, and your involvement makes a meaningful difference in their success.
Looking ahead, I would love to work together to build even more opportunities to engage our families in the life of our school. One way we can do this is by strengthening—or establishing—a PTO, PTA, or Booster Club. These groups are powerful tools for creating community, supporting teachers, and enriching our students’ experience through events, fundraising, and volunteer opportunities.
To move forward, we need your voice. I would greatly appreciate your feedback on:
What types of events or activities would you like to see at our school?
Are you interested in helping start or join a parent group like a PTO, PTA, or Booster Club?
What are the best ways for us to connect and communicate with you?
Please take a moment to share your thoughts by filling out a short survey, by Wednesday, May 14th. Click on the button below to complete the survey. Thank you!
Together, we can build a stronger school community that supports all of our students.
Warmly,
Eileen Gow
