At J.O. Wilson Elementary School, we are SOARing to success every day in every way by creating an environment in which joy, pride, positive interactions, and growth mindsets lead students to comfort in taking risks, self-advocating, and facing adversity.
Important Dates:
August 18th: New Student /Family Orientation and Building Tour @5:30PM
August 25th: Staff/Family/Student Meet and Greet and Ice Cream Social 1 PM-2 PM
August 28th: All students in grades Kindergarten-12th must take a COVID-19 test and report results on Sunday, August 28th.
August 29th: First Day of School for Students in Kindergarten-5th Grade
August 31st: All students in grades PK3 and PK4 must take a COVID-19 test and report results on Sunday, August 28th.
September 1st: First Day of School for Pre-K 3 and Pre-K4 students
September 5th: Labor Day Holiday...No school for students, teachers, and staff
September 6th: After School Programming Begins
September 22nd: Back to School Night 6 PM-8 PM
September 28th: Virtual Principal Chat @ 6 PM
Our commitment at DC Public Schools is to foster a safe environment for our students to learn, grow, and thrive. To support a safe return for the upcoming school year, all students and staff will be required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test for the first day of school.
Here are the three steps families need to take:
- Pick up a test kit.
- Schools will distribute COVID-19 test kits beginning Tuesday, August 23 through Friday, August 26 with the following schedule:
- Tuesday, August 23 and Friday August 26 from 9 am to 2 pm.
- Wednesday, August 24 and Thursday, August 25 from 12:00 to 5:30 pm.
- Families must pick up their test kits from the school their child attends. Families with students who attend multiple schools may pick up test kits for all their enrolled students at one school.
- Families can also pick up a test kit from any District COVID Center, located in all 8 wards. You can find the COVID Center locations and hours at coronavirus.dc.gov/covidcenters.
- Test your student.
- Students in grades K-12 will need to take a COVID-19 test and report results on Sunday, August 28.
- Prekindergarten students will need to take a test and report results on Wednesday, August 31.
- Upload your test results.
Go to DCPSstrong.com/testing to upload your student’s test results on the day they take the test. Uploading your student’s results to the website will help schools ensure a successful first day of classes for students.

Does Your Student Require Dietary Accommodations?
DCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is no longer requiring a new dietary accommodation form for each school year! You must submit a new dietary accommodation form only if:
- Your student is new to DCPS and requires dietary accommodations, or
- There are changes to the students’ current dietary accommodation form on file with Food and Nutrition Services.DCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is no longer requiring a new dietary accommodation form for each school year!
Please note that all dietary accommodation forms submitted in school year 2019-2020 and forward will continue to carry over. DCPS does not serve meals that contain pork, peanuts, or tree nuts. It is our pleasure to serve vegetarian meals in every school, every day. If your student requires vegetarian meals (will not contain meat, poultry, or fish, but may contain dairy and/or eggs), you do not need to complete a Dietary Accommodation form.

To request a dietary accommodation, please follow these steps:
Step 1: Complete the appropriate Dietary Accommodation form for each child in your household that needs a dietary accommodation.
- Medical Dietary Accommodations Form (For medical accommodations such as food allergies. Requires medical provider’s signature.)
- Milk Substitution & Philosophical Dietary Accommodations Form
Step 2: Submit the completed dietary form to dietary.forms@k12.dc.gov (preferred), to your school’s cafeteria or by mail to:

Step 3: Food and Nutrition Services will contact you via e-mail to confirm receipt of the form.
Step 4: Our Dietitian will contact you by phone or email with any follow-up questions or to discuss the modified menu if necessary.
If your student has a severe or life-threatening food allergy, we also encourage you to work with your school to develop a section 504 plan. Please contact your school directly or email 504@k12.dc.gov.
Before completing a dietary accommodation request form, please note:
- Dietary accommodations are tracked centrally via student ID number. If your student transfers to another DCPS school during the school year or less than 4 weeks before the start of a new school year, the form does not need to be resubmitted to us, however, we strongly encourage you to alert us so accommodations can continue without interruption at your destination school. Please email us at dietary.forms@k12.dc.gov.
- Forms must be complete before accommodations can be met, including parent/legal guardian signatures and licensed medical provider signatures (when applicable).

The After School Programs at J.O. Wilson ES
- Polite Piggy's provides after-school programming to 101 total students in grades PK3, PK4, and Kindergarten.
- The DCPS after-school program supports and provides after-school programming to 100 students in grades 1st and 2nd.
- Kid Power supports and provides after-school programming to 150 students in grades 3rd-5th.
* Families with children in different grades, will need to register for the programs that support your student's grade level for the upcoming school year.

DCPS After-School Program Registration is for grades 1st and 2nd!
Before you can register for afterschool programming, you have to complete enrollment for the upcoming school year. Enrollment forms can be submitted electronically at https://enrolldcps.dc.gov/node/71. Please email, Ms. Talisa Stephenson, at jowilsonesenroll@k12.dc.gov if you need help completing the electronic enrollment packet or if you cannot access the electronic submission process.
Kid-Power After School Programming for Grades 3rd-5th
Kid Power at J. O. Wilson serves a total of 150 students in grades 3rd-5th. Students in grades 3rd-5th grade participate in the After School program with Kid Power. Kid Power inspires youth leadership by promoting academic advancement, physical and emotional wellness, and positive civic engagement in underserved communities throughout the District of Columbia. Kid Power embraces youth voice and believes that every young person can become an informed and engaged advocate for change in their own lives and in their communities.
Girls on the Run (GOTR) Fall Season 2022
Girls on the Run (GOTR) uses the power of running to educate and prepare girls/anyone who identifies as female/non-binary participants for a lifetime of self-respect and a healthy lifestyle. The team will meet Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:45.
