Notes from Principal Waters
September 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Pickle Community,
We are already 7 weeks into the school year and time flies when we are having fun learning. We are so grateful for each one of you and so thankful to the parents who attended our first Coffee with the Principal Meeting. We discussed Title I and other important topics. Please join us on our next meeting on October 11th. There will be door prizes.
October is a very busy month with activities, parent-teacher meetings and so much more. Please make sure your child reads or you read to your child every day at home. Practicing skills at home helps the student make better connections with the learning. See Ms. Rodriguez's section below for more tips on to support your child's learning. Together, we can help your child succeed!
Sincerely,
Rosa
JOIN PTA
We encourage you to join PTA by contributing a fee of $8, but you may add a donation to the original fee to help our school. We want more parents ACTIVELY involved in this important association. Contact Norma Garcia for more information. We appreciate your support.
Our Attendance Specialist Ms. Gonzalez
Parents,
Please remember any time your student is absent send a note back the following the day the student comes back.
Note examples are: handwritten parent notes, doctor notes, court/immigration notes. Make sure the student's name and dates are stated on all notes.
Every unexcused absent can add up which will fall into take you as the patent to court.
You can also report an absence using the link below:
Please make sure to make an appointment with your child's teacher for the beginning of the year conference. Students will not have school on that day, but they are welcome to come with you when you meet with the teacher.
If you are not able to meet with your child's teacher on Monday, October 14th, you may meet in person or zoom any other day before or after school, or during the teacher's planning time. These meetings are important as the teacher will share assessment reports and goals for the year and how you can help your child at home.
You can also request the dyslexia, special education teacher, or the counselor to be present in the meeting, but it must be done with time in advance.
Learning Time with Ms Rodriguez
Hello Families,
My name is Ms. Rodríguez and I am the instructional coach at Pickle. This is my 11th year here. I love Pickle and feel so fortunate to be a part of this wonderful community!
What do I do at the school? I work with teachers and administration to increase student academic achievement. This means I work with teachers and grade levels to explore the curriculum, model lessons, analyze student data, and support teacher so that kids reach a high level of achievement.
Here are my question recommendations for each grade level for parent-teacher conferences that are coming up soon:
Pre-K:
Reading: Ask the teacher how many letter names your child knows and what you can do at home to support your child. One of the Pre-K goals is to recognize 20 letter-sound correspondence relationships.
Math: Ask the teacher until what number your child can count to. The Pre-K goal is to count out loud until 30.
Kinder
Reading: Ask the teacher how many letter names and sounds your student knows and what you can do at home to support your child.
Math: Ask the teacher until what number your child can count to. The goal for kinder is to count to 100 by ones and tens out loud.
First
Reading: Ask the teacher how many letter names, letter sounds, and sight words your child knows and ask what you can do to support your child. Starting in January, the teacher will evaluate the student one on one to count how many words they can read in one minute.
Math: Ask the teacher if your child knows all the combinations of 10, for example, 2 + 8, 4 + 6, 9 +1 and what you can do to support your child at home.
Second:
Reading: Ask the teacher how many words a minute your child can read and what you can do at home to support them. The end of year goal is to read 100 words a minute
Math: Ask the teacher if your child knows all their addition and subtraction facts until 20 and what you can do to support your child at home.
Third:
Reading: Ask the teacher how many words a minute your child can read and what you can do at home to support them. The end of year goal is to read 112 words a minute
Math: Ask the teacher if your child knows all their multiplication facts until 100 and what you can do to support them at home.
Fourth:
Reading: Ask the teacher how many words a minute your child can read and what you can do at home to support them. The end of year goal is to read 133 words a minute
Math: Ask the teacher if your child knows all their multiplication facts until 144 and what you can do to support them at home.
Fifth:
Reading: Ask the teacher how many words a minute your child can read and what you can do at home to support them. The end of year goal is to read 146 words a minute
Math: Ask the teacher how your child is doing with the use of decimals and what you can do at home to support them. The end of year goal is to compare, divide, multiply, add, subtract decimals and round them to the nearest hundredth.
Technology for Students
All students are receiving a device (ipad or laptop) to work during the school year. Please ensure that your child takes good care of the device. They may be be sent home for now. Devices lost or damaged will be charged to the parent by the district. Please read the expectations in the link below.

The annual library inventory was completed in September and there are 21,000 items in the Pickle library. Every class has a library class once a week and they check out books. Books are to return to school everyday. 3rd-5th graders participate in The Accelerated Reader Program and they should be reading daily at home.
Family members are encouraged to come to the library and check out books to take home and read with their child. The Pickle library has books in English and Spanish.

* Parents will keep their much younger children from running around in the cafeteria (safety is first)
* Parents may only address their own children (specially if there is a problem)
