Attendance Update
Dear Families,
At the conclusion of semester 1, 81% of our students were present for more than 94% of school so far. This means that 295 students have missed 5 or less days of school this year. That is great news. We are so close to meeting our goal of 84%. Keep up the great work in semester 2!
According to the U.S. Department of Education, students who are chronically absent are 7.5 times more likely to fall behind in school. Here is a snapshot of Duneland's attendance policy.
Key Attendance Guidelines:
- If your student will be absent, please call the main office to notify us. This ensures the absence is not marked as unexcused.
- Each student is allowed four parent-verified absences per semester, the new semester started Tuesday. After these four are used, any additional absence that is not excused will be marked as unexcused.
- Absences verified with a doctor’s note are considered excused and WILL NOT count against the parent-verified or unexcused totals. Please provide the main office with the doctor’s note after your student's visit to the doctor.
- A student is classified as “habitually absent” after 10 unexcused absences and “chronically absent” after a total of 18 absences in a school year. Both can significantly impact academic performance.

Let's work together to identify and address any challenges your child may be facing to ensure a more consistent attendance pattern. Feel free to reach out so we can collaborate on a plan for improvement.
Sincerly,
Mr. Jenks
Assistant Principal

After School Clubs Reminder
At Brummitt Elementary, we are thrilled to offer after-school clubs that provide our students with opportunities to learn, grow, and have fun. However, it is essential for parents and guardians to pick up their students promptly at the end of their club session.
Please note: If timely pickup becomes an issue, students may not be able to continue participating in the club. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us ensure a smooth and safe dismissal process for everyone involved.
Thank you for your partnership in supporting these enriching activities for our students!
Capital Improvements For 2025
The Duneland School Corporation will continue to improve current facilities to enhance the student experience with the following capital improvements in 2025: playground replacements at Bailly, Brummitt, Jackson, and Liberty elementary schools and soccer stadium renovations and carpet replacement at Chesterton High School. This presentation below provides additional details on the scope of each project. Concept drawings and timelines regarding 2021-2025 capital improvement projects are available on the DSC website.

Lockdown Drill
Each month, Brummitt practices a fire drill, a storm drill, or a lockdown drill. On Wednesday, January 15th, Brummitt will be performing a lockdown drill. Indiana schools are required to perform lockdown drills once a semester. We look forward to practicing this drill with our students.
