Letβs stay focused, stay engaged, and give our all so that we can head into the break feeling proud of what weβve accomplished.
I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to our staff, students, and families. Next week offers a chance to pause, recharge, and prepare for the second half of the semester, and Iβm truly thankful for the efforts and dedication that have gotten us to this point.
To our students: Thank you for your perseverance, your focus, and your commitment to showing up each day. Whether things are easy or challenging. Your hard work does not go unnoticed, and we appreciate everything you bring to our school community.
To our incredible staff: I am so grateful for your passion and dedication to our students and families. Every day, you go above and beyond to create an environment where learning thrives, and I thank you for choosing to be a part of this important work.
To our families: You are an essential part of our success. You are your childrenβs first teachers, and we are so thankful for your partnership in supporting their growth and development. Together, we are shaping the future.
To our Board of Trustees: Your unwavering support and commitment to our children and staff make all the difference. Thank you for keeping the focus on what matters most - our students.
Finally, to our community partners: Your generosity and collaboration provide vital support to our schools, our families, and our staff. Your collaboration strengthens the foundation of our school community, and we are grateful for your continued support.
Here's to a great final week of hard work before break. This will be the last newsletter until December 1st. I am wishing everyone a safe, restful, and well-deserved Thanksgiving Break. Thank you for all that you do - letβs return refreshed and ready to continue our important work together!
Warm Regards,
Derild Parsons

IMPORTANT Health Services Information
RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students suspected of having a communicable disease may be temporarily excluded from school until an appropriate medical authority determines that the student is not a health or safety threat to other students or staff members. Written documentation may be required from a medical care provider if determined by the school nurse.
Students will be excluded for any of the following conditions:
Fever 100.4 degrees F or higher
Signs or symptoms of possible severe respiratory illnesses (Flu, COVID, RSV)
Diarrhea, defined as having more than 6 loose stools in a 24-hour period, or 3 in a 7 1/2 hour school day.
Vomiting
Mouth or nose sores (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Rash
Suspicious skin lesions (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Unusual color of skin, eyes, stool, or urine
Exclusion may also occur for the mildly ill child if the child is unable to participate in normal activities or if the child needs more care than can be provided by school health staff.

LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.
Attendance Reminder for Families β
As we approach the "giving" season, we want to encourage our families to review the health information provided above from our Chief School Nurse. Additionally, we'd like to emphasize our attendance policies and procedures.
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT! (State Law NRS 392.130)
Please note that any absence not excused by a medical/mental health professional or a school administrator will be counted against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.
Any absence that goes unreported by the parent will default to a truancy after three days.
Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided or School Admin Excused (not counted against student attendance).
Notification: Schools may notify families of any concerning patterns associated with excessive absences; including but not limited to notes home, School Attendance Review Board (SARB) warnings, pre-SARB notices, and SARB attendance contracts.
π Monthly Students In Transition Newsletter
Did you know that November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month?
In 2007, Congress officially designated November as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month (NHYAM) to raise awareness of youth homelessness, its causes, potential solutions, and the urgent need to prevent homelessness among children and teens. Since then, November has become a month to spotlight the challenges faced by homeless youth, honor the work of businesses, organizations, and volunteers supporting these young individuals, and strengthen national efforts to prevent and ultimately end youth homelessness across the United States.
π Migrant Education Program Newsletter
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) offers technical assistance and financial support to enhance educational opportunities and academic success for migrant children, youth, agricultural workers, fishers, and their families. Its primary goal is to ensure that migrant children receive the same free public education as other children. MEP funds, which are federal, support high-quality education programs for migratory children aged 3 to 21. These funds help prevent penalties due to disparities in curriculum, graduation requirements, or academic standards as children move between states or within a state. Additionally, MEP ensures that migratory children have full and fair opportunities to meet the same challenging state academic standards expected of all students.

On November 13, Churchill County High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC) had their Annual Navy Inspection, led by Master Chief Ken Ballard, the NJROTC Citizenship Development Manager for the area. The event kicked off in the auditorium with a student-led staff brief followed by a pass and review (drill) in the main gym, highlighting the students' dedication and precision. This event is a key highlight for the NJROTC program, one that required a lot of preparation and hard work to be properly prepared for. The students received well-deserved recognition, with special thanks extended to NJROTC instructors Lieutenant Commander Jason Bardin (Retired), and Master Chief Petty Officer James Walker (Retired) for their leadership and support.

Students in Tina Koenigβs music classes have been working on C scale explorations. They began by learning to sing the C scale using solfege syllables, helping them understand the relationship between each note. Students then took their learning a step further by exploring the scale with rhythmic patterns on Orff xylophones. The fun continued as second and third-graders learned to sing the iconic song Do Re Mi from The Sound of Music, applying their knowledge of the C scale. In addition to scale work, students have honed key musical skills, including creating quarter-note and eighth-note rhythms, matching pitch with their voices, and distinguishing between steady beat and rhythm. These activities are helping these young learners build a strong foundation in music theory and performance.
ππΊ Lahontan Elementary School
In celebration of Veterans Day, Lahontan invited all veterans and active duty military family members to join their students for a special Camo and Croissants event. This event offered a meaningful opportunity for military families to come together and honor those who have served and are currently serving. Veterans and active duty military family members enjoyed a complimentary breakfast with their students, then they accompanied their students to their classrooms, where they shared their personal military experiences and engaged with the class. This event aims to promote a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by military service members while providing students with the unique opportunity to connect with veterans and active duty personnel. Itβs a special way to celebrate Veterans Day, build community, and honor those who have served our country.
ππ» Northside Early Learning Center
Students in Octavia Merritt and Montana Koplin's class enjoyed a delicious spaghetti lunch, taking a nice break after a morning of learning. This meal provided a much-needed energy boost, helping students refuel and recharge for the rest of their day. A healthy lunch is important for maintaining focus and staying sharp, allowing these young learners the ability to stay focused and absorb the lessons and concepts they learn throughout the day. Merritt and Koplin reminded students how essential proper nutrition is for both physical and mental well-being.
