Message from Mr. VanIwarden
Hi Coal Creek Families!
We are thrilled to report that this year's Jog A Thon: Rocky's Fun Run was a fantastic success! Our students had an absolute blast, and it was great to see so many smiles on their faces. We enjoyed seeing so many parents at today’s event. Thank you to each and every family who contributed to this wonderful event. If you haven’t had a chance to donate yet, it’s not too late! Remember, no donation is too small, and we truly appreciate every dollar that comes in. Your support makes a significant difference!
A special shoutout goes to Luisa Rosen, our amazing PTA and Mr. Sackett for organizing such an incredible event. Your hard work and dedication are truly appreciated!
As the weather begins to cool—at least we hope it will soon—please ensure that your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the changing temperatures. We love that so many students walk and ride their bikes to school, and we’ve noticed an increase in car traffic during drop-off as it gets cooler.
**Hug N Go Lane Reminders:**
- Please pull all the way forward in the lane.
- Remind students to be ready to exit the car.
- Have students exit on the passenger side only.
- Parents should remain in the vehicle at all times.
As a community, we also ask that everyone uses the crosswalks. Thank you to our parents for modeling safe behavior and helping to keep our students safe.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to help!
CCE ROCKS~Mr. VanIwarden
Tips for Safely Crossing a Street
· Find a safe place to cross.
· Always stop at the edge of the street before entering (Cars must stop for pedestrians and bicyclists in the crosswalk, but they are not required to stop for an approaching pedestrian and cyclist). Never assume that a driver has spotted you.
· Look and listen for cars.
· Look left, right, left again, in front of you and behind you.
· Make sure cars are stopped, make eye contact with drivers.
· Walk quickly but don't run across the intersection, bicyclists should dismount or ride at a pedestrian pace.
· Watch this video to learn more about crossing safely at intersections.
Walk/Bike/Scooter to School
October 9th
8:35am - 8:50am
We will be having a special JAM outside on the Playground at 8:35AM hosted by Mrs. Cauley and a "Special Guest". After you walk, scooter or bike to school that morning, please join in on the fun and get in a little exercise before the day starts.
The PTA will hand out stickers and bookmarks and students can sign the 2024 Walk to School poster.
If your student prefers a more quiet, sensory friendly entrance, please have them use the Cafeteria Garden entrance where students enter the building for breakfast.
A recycle box will be available in the front foyer to collect used shoes from October 4 - 16.
Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday morning.

Health Room News
Parents/Guardians should follow How Sick is Too Sick? - CDPHE’s Illness Policy for Students and Staff in School and Child Care
There are four main reasons for children and adults to stay home:
1. The child or staff member could infect others with a contagious illness, either because of symptoms, a diagnosis, or recent exposure to a contagious illness.
2. The child or staff member does not feel well enough to take part in usual
activities. For example, a child is overly tired, fussy, or will not stop crying.
3. A child needs more care than teachers and staff can give while still caring for the other children.
4. The child or staff member has symptoms or an illness on this list, and staying home is
Report an Absence/Tardy
Parents must log into the student’s Infinite Campus Portal to report an absence or if the student will be tardy. Please complete this reporting PRIOR to 7:50 AM on the day of absence/tardy. Even if you have notified the teacher, you MUST report the absence in Infinite Campus.
If you do not have access to IC, please call the Attendance Line at 720-561-4502.
To ensure student safety, if we have not heard from parents excusing an absence prior to 9AM, the police will be dispatched to complete a welfare check on the student.
Pupil Count
The Pupil Count window is September 24th – October 8th,
with October 1st being the actual Pupil Count Day.
Please try to schedule all appointments or vacations outside of this time period. This is how our school receives funding for our students so it is VERY important that your student is in attendance during this time.
Late Start Wednesday Supervision and Breakfast
You do not need to sign up for the supervision provided from 7:40AM-8:50AM on late start Wednesdays.
Students must enter through the back cafeteria doors by the garden.
Inclement Weather Arrival at School
If we are experiencing inclement weather, we will allow the students into the building starting at 7:40AM. We will fly a YELLOW flag on the flag pole as the indicator when students are allowed into the building early. Supervision will begin at 7:40AM so please do not arrive prior to that time.
Volunteers / Background Checks
- Volunteers and field trip chaperones who volunteer once and are under line-of-sight supervision by BVSD staff at all times only need to go through the front office free Raptor check-in process.
- Individuals interested in volunteering and interacting with students on an ongoing basis under the line-of-sight supervision of BVSD staff should complete the appropriate yearly application in English or Spanish. Please note that a $32.00 background fee is due at the time of submission.
- For volunteers, partners, or field trip chaperones who will not be under the line-of-sight supervision of BVSD staff at all times, a CBI fingerprint check is required through a third-party vendor (these background checks are now valid for 5 years), paid by the volunteer or partner. The volunteer must also sign a BVSD volunteer agreement (Spanish) each year.
See the Volunteers/Visitors Flowchart and the Volunteer/Visitor FAQ for additional details.
School Messenger Notifications
You can choose how you would like to receive messages: phone calls, text messages and/or emails. Set up your preferences so you never miss out on important District communications (this includes weather related notifications).
If you have not been receiving emergency texts from the school (ie. severe weather hold) please go into School Messenger and make sure that you are set up correctly and do not have the school blocked.

Jogathon 2024 is underway!
Thank you to everyone for your support these past few weeks. After all the donations are tallied (and the event team takes a long nap!), we'll share more information on the success of the fundraising efforts and pictures from the event.
It's not too late to donate if you haven't yet and would like to! Cash or checks can be dropped off at the front office of the school or credit card donations can be made online here.
Volunteers needed for teacher door decorating
Whether or not you're crafty, you can show up in a big way by volunteering to decorate a teacher or staff door in October. These doors are a much-loved expression of our appreciation for all the hard work the CCE team puts into helping our kids learn and grow. You can do this at home on your own time with lots of help from Pinterest or, if you're feeling nervous, we've got you covered! We are hosting a door decorating session at the Louisville Library on Sunday, Oct 20 from 1-3 pm so you can craft in good company.
Sign ups and further instructions are on HelpatSchool.
Eat for a cause at Chipotle (Oct. 21)
Give yourself a night off from cooking and swing by Chipotle (375 McCaslin Blvd) in Louisville on Monday, Oct. 21 between 4 and 8 pm. Mention 'Coal Creek Elementary' when ordering in person or use online ordering code FDD8D6N and 25% of your purchase total will go back to the school.
Join us at our next meeting
Friday, Oct. 18, 8-9 am in the library.
Little kiddos (and future Pumas) are welcome to attend with parents!
Parents - we are still looking for people to sign up for door decorating., the October staff appreciation event. We have 20+ teachers & staff who need door decorations! We recognize how busy parents are, but this is one of a handful of teacher appreciation events we REALLY need parents to sign up for.
Thank you to everyone who has already signed up, we really appreciate it.
After School Field and Playground Use
At the end of each school day, BVSD School Age Care (SAC) uses our fields and playgrounds from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Parents/guardians of non-SAC students are welcome to stay with their children and use the playground, as long as they maintain direct supervision. This will help the SAC staff better care for their enrolled students and maintain compliance with child care laws and regulations.

Preschool
Same programming, new schedule!
In the 2024-2025 school year, we will continue to offer preschool Learning and Enrichment. Learning classrooms offer high-quality, play-based instruction. Enrichment classrooms offer an optional extended day that expands on the lessons of the Learning classroom. Both Learning and Enrichment classrooms are capped at 18 students. Students must be enrolled in Learning first and can choose to enroll in Enrichment if offered at that location.
We will be adjusting our schedule to offer half-day preschool sessions five days a week, morning and afternoon, at all of our sites. The majority of our sites will also offer Enrichment on the opposite schedule; i.e., students will be able to attend Learning in the morning and then Enrichment in the afternoon, or alternately, start the day in Enrichment and then go to the Learning classroom in the afternoon. The preschool at Alicia Sanchez Elementary will offer 30 hours of Learning per week; a half-day schedule will not be available.
AM Session: 7:50am-10:50am, M-F
PM Session: 11:50am-2:50pm, M-F
Coal Creek offers Enrichment! If you participate in Enrichment, you also get lunch!
If you are a returning preschooler, we have already worked on pre-registration.
If you are a new 4 year old, you get 15 hours of free preschool through the State of Colorado. Please apply through Bridgecare and select Coal Creek as one of your preferred matches:
https://cdec.colorado.gov/universal-preschool-colorado
If you are a new 3 year old, the only option is tuition-based preschool. It's $620/month for Learning and an additional $620/month for Enrichment. Currently, we are full but things shift and change over the summer so please apply to get on the waitlist:
