Staff Newsletter
September 2019
Welcome to the Savage Beat - your resource for all things "staff". If you have ideas for content you'd like to see here please reach out to communications@savannahr3.com, we would love to hear from you! Savanah R3 wants to put more focus on telling our story. We can't do that without YOU. Let us know what's going on in your classroom, celebrate a coworker's hard work with a #SavageShoutOut, or let us know what we can do to help you be more successful. GO SAVAGES!
#SavageShoutOut
- "I love the staff and student feedback Sarah Portenier has taken the time to gather. SHS truly cares about what's working for people on all levels"
- "the attitude of true collaboration amongst the elementary teachers district-wide has been fantastic!"
Fun by the Fire

Don't forget to catch some school spirit on camera and share it with communications@savannahr3.com, @Savannah_R3, or @SavannahSchoolDistrict.
Staff members are expected to be in the parade or supporting our tribe along the parade route. Friday's early out is given as a time for ALL to show their support of Savannah R3.

Volunteers Needed!
Changes to Missouri law now require any volunteer who will be supervising students to have successfully completed a background check. What does this really mean for your classroom? Can you still utilize parent volunteers? What about class parties, pride parents, and field trips?!?
Volunteers are still an important part of the success of our district. We love parents and community involvement in our schools and we strongly encourage it! We are also passionate about the safety of our students. It is in the best interest of everyone involved for faculty and staff to be aware of who we are leaving our students alone with.
Have a guest speaker coming to your classroom? Fantastic! Stay in the room with your students and enjoy the presentation while also not allowing that guest alone time with our kiddos.
Does a group of grandparents want to help your emergent readers? Awesome! Have them find a comfy spot in the classroom versus secluding them to a hallway.
Uncle Bob's in town and he wants to eat lunch with his favorite 3rd grader? Absolutely okay!
Are room parents and class parties still okay? Of course, they are as long as you hang out for the party and celebrate with your kiddos.
But wait, I was told we had to make a change to our volunteer system... who is this affecting?
The change comes into play with volunteers who will be or have the potential to be alone with students. This includes a field trip chaperone, small group tutors, or any volunteer that you plan to leave unsupervised. Again, we still want volunteers and encourage their engagement but they are now required to obtain a background check through the highway patrol. The cost is around $42 and information about how to get a background check done can be found in any of the school offices or the main district office.
Still have questions? Visit with your building admin about the changes in state law and how our Board of Education policy supports this change.
Please be sure to communicate these changes with your parents/guardians/ current volunteers.

Help Tickets
In the past, we have used a program called “School Dude” for maintenance and technology work orders. School Dude is a little cumbersome so this year we moved to “FMX”. It is simple to use on your part all you have to do is send an email to:
maintenance@savannahr3.gofmx.com - For maintenance requests
technology@savannahr3.gofmx.com - For technology requests
All request must go through FMX. Emailing or calling one of our maintenance or technology personnel does not create a ticket and without a ticket the request will not be completed. Submitting an FMX email is the only way to create a ticket.
What happens after you submit through the FMX email? Maintenance requests go straight to the maintenance department and Technology requests go through your building administrator before being sent to the technology department.
We are back up to full strength in both departments so it should start to run smoothly on all sides.
- This procedure allows our maintenance and technology staff to:
- Be more productive w/their time
- See all work to be done in one place minimizing drive times and maximizing efficiency
- Provides department data on most requested repairs
- Supervision of work and completion times
Hopefully, the FMX email address system will be more user-friendly than School Dude.
