LISD School Newsletter
A Note from Dr. Martin
Dear LISD Families,
It has been such a busy and joyful week at school. We kicked it off on Tuesday with Elementary Arts Night. Big thanks to our art teacher, Jaimie, and our music teacher, Naomi, for their great work preparing our elementary students for performing and showcasing their art. I was so very proud of all the elementary students for a job well done.
On Wednesday night, the PACK hosted a wonderful varsity athletic awards banquet at the Lopez Community Center for the Arts. I just know our student athletes felt celebrated and appreciated by coaches, parents, teammates, and everyone in attendance. Thank you to Samantha Olson, the PACK, our coaching staff, and to our athletic director, Marina, who received the Coach of the Year award. What a night!
Yesterday, the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders rode their bikes to Spencer Spit, had a barbeque there in the afternoon and then a lock-in at school.
Today we had our last character assembly of the year in elementary, the 4th grade class presented a fun activity to demonstrate the character habit of belonging, and we celebrated May and summer birthdays.
Also today, after an afternoon of graduation rehearsal, the class of 2024 went on their Senior Walk through both schools in their caps and gowns on their way to ring the Lopez school bell (at the elementary entrance) at the end of their last day of high school. Each graduating senior got to ring the bell.....just one of the many sweet traditions made possible in a small school district.
Tomorrow is high school graduation and I hope to see many of you there to celebrate the Class of 2024! Also, the senior class families host a community potluck at the community center in the evening. Bring some food and come on down!
All my best,
Martha

Hello Lopez Island! I’m Ginger Plum and I am incredibly excited to start living and contributing to the Lobos school and community. I was born and raised in Washington and have been active my entire life. Sports, 4-H, ranching and farming, playing collegiate volleyball and basketball, teaching swimming, hiking, kayaking and boating, and of course my passion, teaching physical education and health have all shaped my life. Looking forward to next school year so much!

Library Year in Review
Greetings to parents and friends of Lopez students. This year in the library, our students and faculty have checked out a total of 3,343 books! Elementary students alone checked out 2,470 books, faculty checked out 515 books and secondary students checked out 167. The 4th graders took the prize for checking out the most books: 572 over the school year!
The Lopez Island Library has been extremely supportive of our students as well. Many times students or staff will request books that aren't available in the school library. This year, we have checked out 191 books from the public library. Thank you Lopez Island Library! Their support is greatly appreciated.
Read alouds were continuous throughout the year in the elementary setting. Some of the books read to our students include: The Buddy Files (1st); Babe, the Gallant Pig (2nd); The Wild Robot and The Islander (3rd); Kavik, the Wolf Dog, Frindle & Dear Mr. Henshaw (4th); The Honest Truth & When You Reach Me (5th); and Holes and Pictures of Hollis Woods (6th). Of course, many wonderful picture books are shared with Kindergartners and 1st graders!
On June 3, the author, Rosanne Parry visited our school. She met with the K-3rd and 4-6th graders, sharing her writing process and her latest book: "The Wolf Effect" (non-fiction). We have five of her books in the collection, and she autographed all of them! Thank you to the Lopez Island Book Shop for coordinating this opportunity for our students.
Of course, it's the end of the year! There are 212 books still out as of June 6. This is 100 less than last week. Please help your student/s to remember to bring their books back. Thank you!

Archery Club/5th Grade Update from Ms. Becca
This past Saturday the Archery Club traveled to the Silver Bowman Archery Range in Mt. Vernon to practice their archery skills. We walked on trails through amazing forest to targets where the students practiced their skills from multiple distances. This was followed by lunch at the Kiwanis Park and swimming at the Skagit YMCA pool! What a great day! Thanks to Brett Jensen, Lorri Swanson, and Ann Katzenberger for helping with the archery program at Lopez School and for making this event happen.
5th Grade is busy building working computers from scratch! The Raspberry PI Piper Computer kits are fully functional computers that come in a kit of pieces with a blueprint for instructions on steps for building. Once the computers are built, students program them to play Minecraft figuring out along the way how to add functional buttons to make it work. These kits were provided through the Tech Levy funded by our local community!
Last Chance to Claim your Missing Items from Lost & Found!
We have SO MANY items in our lost and found. Please come look through the Lost & Found before the end of the year. There is a Lost & Found pile in Elementary & Secondary buildings. All remaining items at the end of the year will be donated.
Student Devices Need to be Returned
Important Reminder: All secondary student devices need to be turned in by Thursday, June 13th. If your student fails to turn their device in by the required time, the device will be locked and the student account will be charged for the full replacement of the device and peripherals.
Damaged devices will be repaired over the summer. If your family has not purchased the optional computer insurance, the charge of the repair will be applied to your student's Qmlativ account.
Important Notice from the School Nurse
Important Notice: If you/your student has medications being stored in the nurse's office (over the counter or prescription medications, including epi pens and inhalers), they must be picked up and signed out by a parent or guardian by June 17th.
For next year, any student who needs to have a medication on hand (either in the nurse's office or self-carry), the nurse's office legally must have a copy of a doctor's order on file. This includes over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, allergy medicine, etc. The same goes for medications being administered on school trips. This must be done each school year. Attached is a copy of the provider's order form that you can take to your doctor and have filled out. Please turn it in at the start of the next school year.
