7th to 8th Grade Enrollment
7th grade students have received an enrollment form from their Knight Time teacher. This must be completed and returned with a parent/guardian signature on Friday, January 24th.
*Forms may be picked up or dropped off at the front desk in the main office.
Check out the IHMS Enrollment Website for information about IH classes.
Here is the 25-26 Program Planning Guide for district course descriptions.
7th grade students will enter their desired courses into Skyward on Friday, January 24th.
Drop-Off / Pick-Up Procedures Reminder
● Front Circle Drive: Buses ONLY 8:20-8:45 a.m., and 3:20-3:55 p.m.
● West Lot (63rd St.): School-issued car tags ONLY
● South (Delmar) Lot: Available for drop-off from 8:05-8:45 a.m., or pick-up from 3:45-4:05 p.m.
No left turns are allowed out of any parking lot between 8:15-9:00 a.m. and 3:40-4:30 p.m.
When picking up students at the end of the school day in the south (Delmar) lot or the west (63rd Street) lot, it is extremely important that cars continue to pull forward. Cars should only stop along the curb, leaving the inside lane unobstructed for moving cars. Cars should avoid parking along Delmar. Parking on Delmar causes parents who are trying to enter the car line to be double-parked thus impeding traffic. Cars impeding traffic can/will be ticketed.
Please refer to our Car Loop video for visual instructions.
8th Grade Information Night
Shawnee Mission East looks forward to hosting IHMS 8th grade families at our 8th Grade Information Night on January 28, from 6-8pm. The event will begin in the SME Main Gym. Please see this schedule for information and details. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about enrollment, sports and activities, and all things Shawnee Mission East.
We look forward to seeing you then!
This Week in Character Strong - Session 10
7th Grade: Expanding Emotion Vocabulary
This is the 2nd of 3 Sessions on emotion understanding. In this session, we learn about regulating our own strong emotions by naming them and improving our ability to use this approach by practicing distinguishing between different intensities of emotion, which helps us find the right name for what we are experiencing.
8th Grade: Developing Values as Guides
This is the 1st of 3 sessions on values and habits. Students will apply personal values to online environments, recognizing the challenges of implementing them in digital spaces. They will learn to identify cyberbullying and effective response strategies
Family Character Dare: Their Thing
Offer to spend time with a family member doing something that you know means a lot to them. For example, playing chess with grandpa or learning the new video game your student loves.
*Even though it might not be interesting to you, investing in other people’s interests is a great way to have them feel appreciated and validated.

Personal Electronic Device Policy
On January 13th, the SMSD Board of Education approved the Board Policy JCDC: Restrictions on Possession and Use of Personal Electronic Devices. Fortunately, this new policy closely mirrors our current procedures, so the impact on students will be minimal. However, I want to take a moment to ensure you're fully informed about the updates.
Under the new policy, students will be required to store their cell phones, earbuds, or any other personal electronic devices in their lockers from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Devices may only be used during passing periods while students are at their lockers. If a student is seen with a personal electronic device outside of these times, they will be directed to return it to their locker. This will count as their first redirect for the semester. Any subsequent offenses will result in the device being turned in to the office for the rest of the day. After a third offense, we will work with families to develop a plan to ensure the device stays out of the learning environment.
This policy, along with the associated procedures and response plan, will be implemented consistently across all five middle schools in the district.
