Community Connect Update: TWO NEW PROGRAMS!!!!
The first program is Full Bellies Express, which is a weekly food drop-off to families who have requested extra support. Our Coordinator, Amber Estes, picks up food from Maggie’s Food Pantry, Tiera at Cal Fresh Healthy Living, and Catholic Charities of California every Wednesday in Redding, then deliver it to the families. Currently, we are serving 11 families, supporting 44 individuals.
The second program is Backpacks to Home, which involves providing dinner bags for students who either don’t have food at home or have asked for help. These bags are available on an emergency basis for nights when students know there’s no food at home. The program runs completely on donations, and we have identified 16 students, filling 128 bags this week for the regular school days and the three-day weekend.

Community Connect
Sometimes, families need some extra support with the challenges they're facing. When that happens, we want to connect students and families with resources at the earliest possible opportunity.

Jr. Raider Parents and Grandparents ~ It may feel hard to find 20 minutes each day to read with your child, but the cost of not doing this is far too great. Children who read for just 20 minutes per day see 1.8 million words each year and have scores on standardized tests in the 90th percentile (because they have experienced so many words!). Compare this with the child who is reading for just 1 minute per day, they only see 8000 words each year and have scores in the 10th percentile on standardized tests. A small amount of reading each day makes an incredible difference! (Nagy and Herman, 1987)

Join Raider Family Committee:
Along with our amazing teachers and staff at Burney Elementary School, parents play an important role within the school community. A great way to contribute to this community is to become involved with the RFC. The RFC works to build strong relationships among parents, teachers and the school administration in support of students. When you join the RFC you become part of a network of parents and teachers working to enhance our children’s educational experience at Burney Elementary.
What do we do?
- Plan events
- Plan fundraisers
- Have voice on school plans and programs
Why Join the RFC?
- Benefit your child: Research has proven that children perform better when their parents are involved both at home and at school.
- Advocate for change: RFC participation can be a way for you to more effectively suggest change at BES.
- Stay connected: RFC events are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, build connections and discuss issues that are on your mind.
There’s no better way to know what’s happening in your school and be a part of making our school a better place for our kids to thrive and learn. Although welcomed and suggested, joining the RFC does not require any volunteer time on your part.
Native Parent Council
The purpose of the Native American Parent Committee is to assure parent participation in providing programs and services for Native American students. The Parent Committee will also be instrumental in providing parents who have Native American students with information and opportunities to effectively express their views concerning all aspects of education that affect their children.
WHY ATTEND:
1. Learn about our current BES Native Education program
2. Planning Field Trips, Special Programs, Assemblies for Native students
3. Planning Family Movie Night to show “Gather” https://gather.film
4. Overview of school initiatives and events
5. Open forum to discuss parent concerns and suggestions.
Safety is our highest priority!
The safety of your child and all children in our schools as well as the safety of the school staff and support personnel is very important to us. In order to maintain a safe environment for our children to study and learn, it is necessary that we practice our emergency and crisis response plans by having drills designed to exercise our procedures.
The students and staff of our school will be practicing emergency drills throughout the year. They are “FIRE DRILLS”; “EARTHQUAKE DRILLS”; “LOCKDOWN DRILLS”; “SHELTER-IN-PLACE DRILLS”, and “EVACUATION DRILLS”. Each type of drill is explained below.
FIRE DRILLS
The school will conduct a “fire drill” each month that school is in session. This is a Fire Code requirement as well as a requirement for all California public schools. We want each student to understand and be aware of the importance of this drill and not be afraid when the fire alarm is sounded. By practicing they will know what to do and how to do it.
EARTHQUAKE DRILLS
The school will conduct regular earthquake drills. Students will be taught to “Drop,” “Cover,” and “Hold On.” They will also be taught how to keep themselves safe if outside the building during an earthquake.
LOCKDOWN DRILLS
The school will conduct “Lockdown Drills” periodically throughout each school year. This type of drill will secure the school building and safely shelter all students, staff and visitors inside the building. The purpose of this drill is to keep the students safe from any danger outside or inside the building. During a “lockdown drill” all of the perimeter doors to the school building will be locked and will remain locked until the danger or issue outside or inside the building is removed. To enable everyone to remain safe, no one will be allowed to enter the building during our drill.
SOFT LOCKDOWN/SHELTER-IN-PLACE DRILLS
The “Soft Lockdown/Shelter-in-Place” drill will be conducted each school year. The purpose of this drill is to be prepared to move to a safe location within our building in case of severe weather or as a precaution if there is a danger in the neighborhood.
EVACUATION DRILLS
During an “Evacuation Drill”, students will be safely escorted along a designated evacuation route to one of our pre-determined evacuation sites. At the conclusion of the drill, all students will be escorted back to the school.
In the event of an actual Emergency :
-In the event of an actual emergency evacuation, you will receive notification where to pick up your child as soon as possible.
-We will notify parents by phone call, text, email and the BES Facebook page.
-Please make sure that your contact information is current at all times so that you can be reached without delay in the event of an emergency.
-Do not call the school offices (as they will be busy with the drill or actual emergency)
-Do not contact students or staff members via cell phone or social media (as they will be busy with the drill or actual emergency)
-Avoid personal social media posts. Correct information will be disseminated through our automated system as soon as possible.
How to Pick Up Your Child in the Event of a Real Emergency:
1. Instructions for picking up children will be made available through the texts, phone calls, emails and BES Facebook.
2. In most cases, the school will be locked during and immediately following a crisis. No one, other than emergency personnel, will be allowed to enter until it is determined that conditions are safe.
3. When it is safe to release students, there will be a reunion plan. Parents/Guardians need to be prepared to check in at the reunion site with identification.
4. Students will not be released to anyone other than their parents (or an individual listed on the child’s emergency card).
We will be discussing our Safety procedures and plan at the upcoming School Site Council meeting on Wednesday, October 18th at 3:15pm and 10/18 at the Raider Family Commitree 5:30pm. Parents, Grandparents and Guardians are welcome to join us.
If you have any questions regarding any of these Safety Drills or other safety concerns, please contact your school office, or Principal Aderman.
Parent/Grandparent Volunteers
We are very excited when parents, grandparents and community members want to volunteer and help in our school and classrooms. We think student safety is very important and have procedures in place to provide a safe learning environment for our students.
If you are interested in volunteering your time, please, stop by our BES Office to fill out an application.
FRJUSD School Board policy requires all regular classroom volunteers become “cleared” volunteers by submitting an application, a current TB test, and be fingerprinted. *Fingerprinting fees are paid for by FRJUSD.
