From the Principal:
As parents and staff members, our children's safety is our highest priority. As we are finishing eleven days of school we are still settling in to routines. Something we can never place on auto pilot is the safety of our children walking and riding bikes. One of our wonderful Collins staff members experienced a tragedy on the first day of school for her godchild. McKinney Texas Story Sweet Landon did not survive being struck by a truck as he crossed a street on his bike on the way to his first day of school.
We need all of our drivers, whether parents or community members, to pay extra careful attention when our students are on the walkways and roads.
- Slow down in our school zones and in neighborhoods. Many children come to school early for practices, and may be traveling outside of the time the school zone sign is blinking.
- Pay attention to crosswalks, and obey crossing guard instructions.
- Be attentive and off of cell phones in school zones and around neighborhoods.
In our own school zone, we had a close call with a crossing guard and a car. In the mornings, the sun can be so bright that it prevents drivers from seeing children crossing the street. Please also talk to your children about bike and pedestrian safety.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday at Parent Information Night. Stay safe in the heat.
Wishing you all the best,
Shelli LeBlanc

The evening will begin in your child’s homeroom class. The parents will then rotate to visit your child’s core classroom teachers.
Our hope is that every parent can attend this informational event. Should your children need to be present with you during the parent/teacher event, we recommend they have a book or silent activity to engage in as they stay with you through the evening.
Regarding parking - if you choose to park at the back of Collins please remember these two important things:
- Please DO NOT park on both sides of the narrow drive leading to the back of Collins from Gosling. It is not safe! An emergency vehicle could not reach the back of the school when parents use both side of the small drive.
- Please only make a right turn to exit onto Gosling. Everyone can exit very smoothly and safely when only turning right.
We look forward to Tuesday evening!

Lunch Reminders
Please be sure to check your child's MySchoolBucks account. Many students are buying multiple snacks at a time, or purchasing snacks for friends. The cafeteria is required to sell multiple snacks unless a parent has put a restriction on the student's account. To do this, contact Child Nutrition at 936-709-8185.
Nurse Kendall's Update
Parents please do NOT send medications to school with your child, including cough drops and inhalers. This is a district policy - parents must bring the medication to school and sign a permission form. Students are not allowed to carry inhalers unless we have a doctor’s order. Please contact your child’s doctor and request an order for the school to allow your child to self-carry an inhaler and bring it to the clinic.
Covid, unfortunately, is on the rise again. We ask that if your child tests positive for Covid, please sign on to their SSO, click on Covid Central and do the self report. The state health department is still tracking Covid numbers and this helps the district keep track of and report our numbers to the health department.

Band
We are so excited to get the school year started! A couple of things to keep in mind for these first few weeks as we get into the swing of things:
Practice records are due every Tuesday. Practice records must be signed by a parent or guardian to receive credit.
Unless you play bassoon, French horn, euphonium, tuba, or percussion, please remember to take your instrument back and forth to school daily.
Our band handbook, with all of the concert dates and activities and attire information, has been sent home via email. Please review this as a family so that we are all on the same page for the year. 🙂
Art
We are off to a great start to the school year in the art room at Collins! Some students are working on their drawing skills and are learning about artist Chuck Close and the grid method. While other students are diving into the world of Graffiti and learning about the famous street artist Banksy.
Thanks to all the kiddos who brought their sketchbook to school! As a reminder, we ask that each art student provide their own sketchbook and pencil, but all other art materials will be provided. Students are welcome to bring their own art supplies to supplement what is provided by Collins but it is in no way required. Happy drawing!
Choir
Choir is back!
The Collins Cobra Choir officially starts rehearsing after school on Tuesday, August 22. Rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 PM to 5 PM. Please refer to the handbook for important information, dates, and the rehearsal calendar. Paper copies will be sent home with students at the first rehearsal. Hope to see you there!
PE
The year is starting out great! It has been wonderful getting to see all of the kids moving again. We have gone over the rules and expectations for the PE classroom, learned some new games, and completed our Badminton unit. We will be moving into our Four Square unit next. We will have Cobra Cardio once a week. Students need to wear sneakers on that day. We have a calendar posted in the gym, so students are aware of which day it will be. We are looking forward to a fantastic year of sports and health.
Bad Weather
Dismissal in Bad Weather
We have had a natural occurrence of parents walking up to Collins to pick up their students by the bike rack closest to the YMCA. Even though we will not release students to walk or bike once a rainy day dismissal has been called, we will release students directly to a parent to assume responsibility for the safety of the child. We have a staff member collecting student names (car rider signs not required - but are helpful) and a system for students to report to the area where a parent is waiting.
If there is extreme weather (wind, hail, lightning, extreme rain) at 4:00 PM, we will not utilize the walk - up process - parents will be required to only use the car line to maximize efficiency of safely exiting students from our building. If a rainy day dismissal is called but there is not extreme weather (wind, hail, lightning, extreme rain) at 4:00 PM, the walk up process will be open for parents to pick up their child(ren). Parents should wait by the bike rack closest to the YMCA and not the front porch.
Every parent should have a car rider sign, and it should be visible in the car rider line. If you are picking up additional students due to rainy day dismissal, please write each student’s ID number as large as possible on a piece of paper. Families without the car rider signs and without the student ID slows the process down substantially.
