A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
As we approach the much-anticipated Spring Break in a few weeks, I wanted to take a moment to highlight some exciting developments happening here at LIS. Mr. Michaloplous and our dedicated team are diligently preparing our students for the upcoming spring performance, while our basketball season is already underway. It's truly awesome to witness our students showcase their talents and dedication, whether it be in sports, clubs, or classroom activities.
However, with the excitement of these events, I would like to remind everyone of the importance of maintaining a supportive and positive environment for our students. While it's natural to feel enthusiastic and passionate about their performances, it's crucial that we, as spectators, refrain from putting undue pressure on them. Our students deserve to feel encouraged and empowered, rather than feeling overwhelmed by external expectations.
I urge all families and guests to be mindful of their role as spectators and to avoid coaching or directing from the stands during events. Our volunteer coaches invest countless hours in planning and preparing for these occasions, and it's essential that we trust in their expertise and allow them to guide our students to success.
Let's work together to create an atmosphere of support, respect, and encouragement for our students as they showcase their talents and skills. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support in nurturing our students' growth and development.
Also, a quick reminder that Wednesday is Pink Shirt Day, where we stand together against bullying. We will be having a special assembly to raise awareness, and we encourage all students to wear pink shirts as a symbol of solidarity. Thank you for joining us in promoting kindness and inclusivity at LIS.
Enjoy the sun this weekend!

Black History Month in Ladysmith
Students in Ladysmith have been working together to support a Black History Month initiative. Students from Ladysmith Intermediate and Secondary schools have been using story telling as a way to educate and share information with primary students
Anti-Biased Film Festival
The seventh installment of our Anti-Bias Film Festival is "What Would You Do" The video captures an incident at Danny Moe's barber shop in Harlem where a White barber faces discrimination due to his race. Tensions rise when Rachel, an actor playing a hairdresser, confronts a White woman, questioning her presence with a Black man.
The conflict escalates as other customers express their disapproval, leading to a powerful discussion about racism and moving forward as a community. Through emotional exchanges and introspection, the video highlights the importance of addressing prejudice and advocating for inclusivity in society.
This week’s Outer Limits update
Auditions are now finished and every student knows their role in each play. Full scripts have been sent home with students in all classes who have speaking roles so that they can start practising and memorizing their lines. I recommend that your child memorize a few lines each day or two to slowly build towards knowing all their lines by heart. The off-book date (when lines should be fully memorized) is April 2nd.
Along with their own lines, they need to memorize ‘cue lines’ as well. A cue line is dialogue spoken by another performer which is just before your child’s line. By knowing all the cue lines, students will know exactly when speak during the play. A great way for you to help your child learn their cue lines is having you read random cue lines from the script and your child then continues the dialogue after each cue line. This will help them truly master their dialogue.
If your child is a cast member (has a speaking part), they should have 25% of their lines and cue lines memorized by the end of this weekend.
Please keep these scripts at home in a safe place so they won’t be misplaced or lost. There is no need for scripts to come back to school since we have copies in the fine arts room that we will be using during in-school rehearsals. Digital copies are not available.

Soccer Camp
The Royal Soccer Club is hosting morning and full day summer camps in July and August. The club is a registered non-profit community organization offering summer camps for 31 years. The summer camps promote a healthy and active lifestyle but also encourage and teach personal development, team building, leadership and other important life skills. The programs are for all children aged 5 to 13 years (Kindergarten to Grade 8).
Student Learning Survey
The Provincial Student Learning Survey is unique in its scope, size and usefulness to schools. It gathers information from parents/guardians/caregivers, teachers, and students on topics related to school environment, safety, and achievement. The information is used for planning in individual schools and provides a district and provincial perspective.
Early in 2024 the Student Learning Survey will be administered to students in grades 4 and 7, their parents/guardians/caregivers, and all school staff. We encourage parents/guardians/caregivers to participate in this survey, as the results are important in identifying and celebrating current strengths, as well as determining where the school needs to focus improvement. The surveys contain standard questions for the Province – in addition, questions from the school and/or district that focus on local conditions or issues may be included.
To complete the survey:
- Go to any computer that has an up-to-date internet browser access at home, work, or school.
- Go to www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/access.htm
- Under the section Direct Access – no logon number required select:
- District: the name of your child’s district
- School: the name of your child’s school
- Language: the language of your choice
- Complete the survey by clicking on the appropriate circle to answer each question. Move to the next set of questions by clicking on the right arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen. Click on the left arrow to navigate backwards.
- When you are finished the survey, you will get a message “Thank you for sharing your views”.
- Once complete, your school will have the results immediately.
The e-survey site will be open until May 3rd.
If you have any questions, please contact the school at 250-245-3351

Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
