DAYS OF THE CYCLE
Mon. - Presidents Day, Tues. Day 2, Wed. Day 3, Thurs. Day 4, Fri. Day 5
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“It reaffirms that all of us are America - that African American history is not somehow separate from our larger American story, it’s not the underside of the America story, it is central to the American story. That our glory derives not just from our most obvious triumphs, but how we’ve wrestled triumph from tragedy; and how we’ve been able to remake ourselves again, and again, and again, in accordance with our highest ideals. I too, am America.”
- President Barack Obama , September 24, 2016
Dedication of the National Museum of African American History and Culture
A Note from the Principal
In honor of Presidents Day and Black History Month, I share with you the words of our 44th President, Barack Hussein Obama at the dedication of the Museum of African American History and Culture. There is perhaps no better person to capture the meaning of black history to our country and the importance of lifting it up as an integral part of our nation’s fabric than our nation’s first black President. His words stand alone as a celebration of the accomplishments and acknowledgment of the struggles of black and brown Americans, and underlying it all, as a call to action for our future.
My daughter, Dominique, had the honor of being present for the dedication of the museum, and bearing witness as her mentor and role model brought life to the words that she had been so thirsty to hear - that her experiences, her culture, her life, matter, not just one month a year, but as an integral part of our nation’s history. I cried with her that night as she shared with me her experience of hearing President Obama’s speech. My daughter’s experience as a young black girl, growing up in a predominantly white community and school system, mirrors so many. There are Dominiques in each of our hallways and classrooms, eagerly awaiting to have their experiences, lives and promise lifted up.
As educators and guardians of tomorrow’s future, it is incumbent upon us to nurture the future leaders of our world, the future Barack Obamas in our classrooms, who rely on us to create equitable schools where their potential is nurtured, where their culture is celebrated, and their voices encouraged.
