May Character Trait is Decision Making
“Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than to be able to decide.”
This month our students will be focusing on the character trait of making good decisions. Students demonstrate good decision making by gathering information, analyzing options, considering consequences, and making informed choices. These skills are essential for students to become independent thinkers and problem solvers. Middle school is a critical time for developing decision-making skills as students are transitioning from childhood to adolescence and facing new challenges and responsibilities.
At the end of the month, a student from each grade level will be selected for consistently exhibiting good decision making and/or showing improvement.
Check out this online article for how to support your middle school child with making good decisions.
Mental Health Month
We live in a rapidly changing world that can be complex to navigate. About half of Americans can remember a time when we were not constantly connected and it was easier to tune out the noise of the world, while the younger half of the population can’t imagine life without the internet.
Finding a sense of calm and focusing on well-being when you are having mental health concerns can be daunting in our fast-paced society. It can be especially challenging to know where to start.
May is Mental Health Month and Crossroads Center is raising awareness of the important role mental health plays in our lives. We are encouraging members of the community to take action toward protecting their mental health and overall well-being.
This May, Crossroads Center will focus their efforts on helping members of the community to:
• LEARN how modern life affects mental health with new resources to navigate our changing world.
• ACT by building a coping toolbox to manage stress, difficult emotions, and challenging situations.
• ADVOCATE to improve mental health for themselves, the ones they love, and their community.
Mental Health America has created a toolkit to help individuals figure out where to start. The toolkit provides free, practical resources for addressing mental health. Go to mhanational.org/may to learn more.
If you think you may be experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition and are unsure of where to start, take a free, private mental health test at mhascreening.org to determine next steps. It’s important to remember that working on your mental health takes time. Change won’t happen overnight. Instead, by focusing on small changes, you can move through the stressors of modern life and develop long-term strategies to support yourself — and others — on an ongoing basis
8th Grade Families
Our 8th graders will have the opportunity to participate in a canoe trip on May 20th. Eligibility will be based on attendance and behavior. Please check with your 8th grade student for the permission slip.

Utility Assistance
Energy Assistance is a year-round program. You can apply at any time during the year, but you can only receive benefits once each year and must reapply each fiscal year (July- June).
If you are having trouble affording your utility or heating bill, you do not need a turn-off notice to qualify for assistance. The Office of Home Energy Programs strongly encourages you to apply for assistance before you receive a turn-off notice so that funds can be applied to your account as soon as possible.
