September at LES
An update by Ms. Scorso-2023
A great start to the new school year!
Dear LES Community,
It's been a terrific start at LES! So wonderful to see our learners back at school! Also, welcome to our new families! Students transitioned well to their new classrooms and are settling in and making new friendships. Teachers will be reaching out to parents to get to know your learner even better! The home-school connection is essential to student success.
Please review the calendar dates below! Our open house will be Thursday, September 28th. New this year-come join me in the cafeteria from 5:30-6pm for a "Day in the Life at LES!" I will share information on our curriculum, social emotional learning, safety at LES, and how you can best support your learner at home. Starting at 6pm, families are welcome to visit classrooms and meet with teachers. We look forward to seeing you at this important LES event!
As always, please reach out with any questions. Wishing all our families a wonderful school year!
Best,
Ms. Scorso
Curriculum Update by Rita Quiles-Glover, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
Connecticut’s Right to Read Act requires all public schools to adopt a state-approved literacy program for grades K-3. The reading pilot team at Lebanon Elementary School began collaborating and reviewing state mandates and programming last year. A big thank you to each grade level team member (Kamila Nowak, Heather Lyon, Melissa Orlando, Jan Gervais, and Deb Ieni) as well as instructional coach, Stephanie DeLucia who volunteered their efforts to help support their colleagues through this transition. Our district team began the process reviewing state-approved programs and after careful vetting, chose Savvas My View Literacy as the program to pilot for the 23-24 school year.
In our research, we are looking to adopt a program for grades K-4 to ensure a strong vertical alignment as our students progress through their foundational years of learning. The selected program will be piloted for the school year in the 5 classroom teachers who are part of the pilot team. A decision will be made in the Spring of 2024 about which reading program best fits the needs of Lebanon Public Schools and our students. These state-selected programs are based on the science of reading and are designed to help students develop fundamental skills needed to be successful readers and writers. Many of these programs have technological platforms and provide an engaging, personalized and interactive learning experience. We will keep you updated on progress (as we did with the math pilot process) to ensure that our students are provided with the best possible education, grounded in research and best practices.
September is Attendance Awareness Month
One of our district goals this year is to work with families to support students' attendance . The link below is from attendanceworks.org. It provides facts about the effects of chronic absenteeism and strategies that can be used to help. If your child is having a difficult time attending school consistently, feel free to reach out to school staff (your child's teacher, Ms. Scorso, Ms. Konow, Mr. Borkowski, or Mrs. Brown) so we can work with you to address this concern.
Instructional Coach Update

Welcome to a new school year! Many of our LES students completed the CT Summer Reading and Math Challenges. Students spent their summer reading and visiting local businesses to sharpen their math skills. Over the summer, a total 122 students participated in the summer reading challenge, reading a total of 2,955 books! 55 students completed our Lebanon summer math challenge. Congratulations to all of our students that participated!
You may have heard of decodable texts and your child may bring home these types of books or passages this year. Decodable texts encourage students to sound out words using decoding strategies versus guessing from looking at the picture. Decodable texts provide learners an opportunity to practice their segmenting and blending skills. Segmenting means breaking apart words, such as knowing that the word /mat/ is made up of three sounds, or phonemes, /m/ /a/ /t/. Blending is putting the phonemes, or sounds, together. Readers will blend the sounds /m/ /a/ /t/ and read /mat./
Here are two articles for families to support you with reading and math at home as school gets back in session.
New in Kindergarten Next Year!
New Entry Age for Kindergarten for starting 2024-2025 school year
Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, children need to turn 5 years old on or before September 1 in order to be automatically eligible for kindergarten. This will be a change from the current kindergarten cutoff date of January 1. For the 2024-25 school year and all following years children must turn 5 on or before September 1 to enter kindergarten for any given school year.
Are there any exceptions to this change?
Yes. If your child does not meet the new entry cutoff date, they may still be admitted into kindergarten
upon (1) a written request from the parent or guardian, and (2) an assessment completed by the school
that determines admitting the child to kindergarten would be developmentally appropriate.
Please reach out to Ms. Scorso with any questions.
Health Room Updates
My name is Kelsey Konow and I have been the LES School Nurse since September 2022. I am looking forward to another great school year with all of the amazing students and staff members at the LES! If you ever have any questions or concerns, such as about when to keep your child home from school due to illness or injury, physical exam and immunization requirements, health concerns or allergies that your child has, or any other health related information about your child that would be important for me to know, please feel free to reach out to me via phone call at (860) 642-5765 or email at kelsey.konow@lebanonct.org. Please review the information listed below:
Annual Health Summary: An Annual Health Summary is sent out at the beginning of each school year so that I can review your child's most updated medical information. Please feel free to share any of your child's relevant health history, including allergies/sensitivities, past injuries or surgeries, health conditions, and if your child will need to take medication at school. If you have not returned this completed form already, please have it sent back to me as soon as possible.
Medications at School: Per school policy, a student cannot carry any medications in their backpack or lunchbox. Additionally, they can only take medications, whether prescription or over the counter, if a medication authorization form has been completed, dated, and signed by a doctor and it has been submitted to the school nurse. This form needs to be updated every year. If your child has any medication that they need to take at school, please contact the school nurse and it would need to be dropped off by a parent/guardian. If your child comes to school with any medications in their backpack, it will need to be kept in the health office locked medication cabinet until a parent/guardian can pick it up or submit a medication authorization form so it can be given at school. Please contact the school nurse with any questions or concerns about this school policy and if you would like a copy of a blank medication authorization form.
Allergies/Classroom Parties: Please speak with your child’s teacher before bringing any snacks, drinks, or goody bags to school for class parties as potential classroom allergies may impact what may or may not be distributed. Notification of acceptable food items for classroom parties will be communicated by your child’s teacher. Healthy snacks and treats are always encouraged. If your child has a food allergy and/or sensitivity, and there are specific foods you are comfortable with them eating for classroom parties, please contact the child's teacher and the school nurse about this.
Hand Washing: As we start a new school year, it is important to remind students about proper hand washing techniques to keep members of our LES community healthy. A hand washing information paper is attached to this newsletter; please review this with your child at home. Students will also be reminded about proper hand washing techniques while at school.
Physicals: The State of CT requires that students have a physical exam with updated immunizations within the last twelve months prior to the start of Preschool and Kindergarten. Please submit the necessary paperwork, as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. If your child is in a different grade than Preschool and Kindergarten but had a recent physical exam, please also submit that physical form and/or immunization record so that it can be kept in their medical file at school. These physical exam forms and vaccine records can be emailed to kelsey.konow@lebanonct.org, faxed to the school, or a paper copy can be dropped off.
Thank you so much and have a spectacular September!

5 Steps for Proper Hand Washing
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or an air dryer.
Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to wash off germs. However, if this is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content can reduce the amount of germs on the hands.
How to Use Hand Sanitizer
- Apply the gel product to the palm of one hand; read the label to learn the correct amount.
- Cover all surfaces of the hands with sanitizer.
- Rub your hands and fingers together until they are dry. This action should take around 20 seconds.
