Family Newsletter — Saturday, May 4th, 2024
Message from Principal Washington
I wanted to send our school newsletter a day early to share some important updates regarding questions some of our families and community members have about our honors classes within our school.
Over time, our goal is to continue increasing equity in schools to ensure all students have access to rigorous coursework and opportunities for growth. We also know these opportunities do not always need to be offered in separate classrooms. Adjusting our course offerings does not eliminate our ability to provide strong instruction and challenging coursework for every student in every classroom. Academic rigor is our aim for every student in our district.
Based on feedback shared by our community stemming from a lack of communication around this topic, we will not have any changes to our honors classes for this upcoming school year at Stanwood High School.
We understand the importance of implementing these equitable practices and appreciate our staff, families, and community to work with us. Together, we can lay the groundwork for this goal.
If such a transition occurs in the future, our educators are dedicated to providing differentiated instruction and personalized support to ensure that each student is appropriately challenged and supported in their academic journey. We would engage our community, staff, students, and School Board throughout the process.
Thank you for your continued partnership in creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.
Sincerely,
Mr. Washington
Principal
District Promise
Every student in the Stanwood-Camano School District is empowered to learn in an inclusive setting and is prepared for the future of their choice.
Stanwood High School Vision Statement
Stanwood Spartans are united in cultivating character, modeling respect, teaching leadership and connecting to community.
Excusing Attendance
- Absences must be excused within 72 hours of the student's return to school.
- Parents and guardians may excuse absences by calling the attendance secretary at 360-629-1305, through Absence Notification using their Family Access password, by emailing kmccurry@stanwood.wednet.edu, or by sending a note to the attendance office with the student.
- Messages on notes, voicemail, or email should include the student's first and last name, the date of the absence, the reason for the absence, and the parent or guardian's signature.
- Stanwood High School defines excused absences as due to illness, appointment, or family business. Oversleeping, car trouble, traffic congestion, and bus missing are not excused absences.
- If the student has classes at Stanwood High School AND Lincoln Hill High School, you must contact BOTH schools to excuse absences.
Summer School Information
Our Summer School program is designed for students who have credits that they need to recover. That means that they did not pass a class at SEMESTER either this year or in year's past. Summer School will be from 9am-12noon, July 29-Aug 23 at Stanwood High School. Both breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please register by getting a paper registration packet in the counseling office or through this link. https://forms.gle/bU4E7VUcnuxrdSMN6
All the attendance requirements and transportation information is provided in both paper and online forms.
For any questions, please contact Kelly Parsons at kparsons@stanwood.wednet.edu or 360-390-2299.
SBA Testing
This spring, all 10th graders and some 11th and 12th graders who still need to meet their pathway will take the Smarter Balanced Assessments in Math and English Language Arts in Math and English Language Arts classes.
The Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) will also be given to 11th graders in their respective Science Classes.
Students must bring their charged Chromebooks daily, as they will be used for testing.
The dates of the assessments are listed below.
May 20th-May 24th: ELA
May 28th-May 31st: Math/WCAS
June 3rd-7th: Makeups (all)
Smarter Balanced ELA and Math Assessments consist of a computer adaptive test and a performance task.
For state testing, we will provide headphones and all testing materials for students. If they'd like to use their own/personal headphones, please make sure they are WIRED and plugged into our Chromebook (state testing does not allow wireless headphones).
For more information about the Smarter Balanced and WCAS tests, visit: https://www.k12.wa.us/student-success/testing/state-testing-overview, and click on the name of the test.

WHAT IS THE GRADUATION PARTY?
Stanwood High School Class of 2024 graduation party is an opportunity for all seniors to participate in a special evening of celebration, fun, and memories. This celebration is not a school-sponsored event but has been planned and organized by a SHS 4A Booster Club parent volunteer committee of the SHS Class of 2024. This celebration is designed to provide the Class of 2024 with an avenue for celebrating their successful educational achievement with their classmates in a safe and secure environment.
WHO CAN ATTEND?
The Grad Night Celebration is open to all Stanwood High and Lincoln Hill High School Class of 2024 graduating seniors.
WHERE WILL THE GRADUATION PARTY BE HELD?
The location of the celebration will be a surprise to the students until they arrive at the site. The planning committee will know where the students are at all times. We've kept it a surprise for a good reason- safety! This event is for the Class of 2024 only, and we do not want any uninvited guests.
WHEN DOES IT TAKE PLACE?
Buses will leave immediately following the completion of graduation ceremonies at SHS on June 7, 2024, and will return to SHS early the following morning, June 8, 2024.

WESCO Spectator Guidelines & Sportsmanship Code
The essential elements of character-building and ethics in interscholastic athletics are embodied in the concept of seven core principles: sportsmanship, discipline, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, and respect. To demonstrate sportsmanship in the stands, we ask all spectators to adhere to these 5 basic guidelines:
- I will appreciate all good plays and players, whether they compete for my team or my opponent.
- I will remember that school athletics are an extension of the classroom and that learning is taking place.
- I will be positive and use respectful language towards players, coaches, officials, and other spectators.
- I will respect the abilities and sensitivities of our opponents and officials, regardless of the outcome of the contest.
- I will remember that my actions reflect on others, including students, school, and the community.
