Principal's Message 📚
Good evening, Deer Canyon families!
Coming off of an amazing Movie Night last Friday, VAPA VISION Day today and all of the big and small moments throughout the past week, the month of October continues to bring many exciting events!
Next week, we will be recognizing national Digital Citizenship Week. I am working with DC Leaders to produce a schoolwide message announcing the start of Digital Citizenship Week, what it means to be a digital citizen, and why it is important to learn about healthy, balanced, and safe technology and media engagement.
On Monday, I will be sending home a stand-alone email to families with resources to support families in engaging in activities and conversations about technology and media. At Deer Canyon, students participate in multiple digital citizenship lessons throughout the year. Our teachers regularly implement lessons around digital citizenship and are often engaged in organic conversations about safe, responsible use of technology. I look forward to continuing to highlight the importance of digital citizenship next week!
The week of October 21 is Red Ribbon Week at Deer Canyon. The 2024 Red Ribbon Campaign Theme is "Life is a Movie, Film Drug-Free" Mr. Higgins will be working with DC Leaders to provide a week of engaging activities for students to reflect on and practice the importance of making safe choices for our bodies and minds.
Additionally, I am excited for Monster Mash on the evening of October 25 and our Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 31, at 9 am. After Halloween, we will cap our week off with a FUNky Friday and Coffee with the Principal on Friday, Nov. 1. Mark your calendars!
We are experiencing an uptick in cold and flu germs on campus. We want to keep our students and staff healthy, happy, and inside our classrooms! Please help remind your student of appropriate personal hygiene routines, including washing their hands, covering their mouth, and providing ample space between them and others, when feasible.
Please be sure to bookmark the Deer Canyon school calendar and follow us on Instagram (@DeerCanyonPUSD) for event information, reminders, and celebrations!
Have a wonderful weekend, Deer Canyon!

Caught You Being Kind
I am excited to share with you the names of students who were Caught Being Kind this week!
Through our Caught Being Kind program, students recognized by a staff member for exemplifying any of the six pillars of character — trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, or citizenship — are announced over the loudspeaker each Monday morning. These students then come to the office for an in-person message from me, and we take a group photo together! First-time Caught Being Kind students receive a small prize, which is distributed by their teacher.
