October 24, 2024
Hi there families,
I am looking forward to seeing you at “Coffee” with me tomorrow morning at 8:30am. Please check into the Main Office first and meet me in room #143 for an informal conversation and opportunity to ask questions. I will share information about some of our school initiatives as well as the modernization efforts.
We had a very successful Homecoming game and dance last Friday evening. Thank you so much to the 20+ parent chaperones who showed up to lend support. We appreciate you! Our football team is #1 in the PIL and both our soccer teams and volleyball teams finish out their regular seasons tonight and look to be locked in for playoff spots. Congratulations to all of our Seniors who have had or will have their senior nights coming up. Go Guardians!
I want to give a big shout out to our parent leaders of the PTA, President Jon Duncan, Booster’s, President Kirsten Carr, and our collaboratively parent led Community Equity Council. I encourage you to please read the missions of each of these groups and we welcome you to participate when your schedule allows. The important parent led groups help us to meet school needs that serve our students. https://www.pps.net/domain/4900
It is the end of first quarter next week and teachers will be submitting grades in synergy. If you have questions about your student’s progress in their learning, please email/contact the teacher directly.
Administrators are here to support you, our students, and our staff in ensuring our students have the BEST learning experience at IBW. Please feel free to reach out to your grade level administrator on behalf of your child any time:
Vice Principal Scott Burns (9th grade) sburns@pps.net
Vice Principal Dr. Sara Gandarilla (10th grade) sgandarilla@pps.net
Vice Principal Jill Altman (11th grade) jaltman@pps.net
Please note Ginger Taylor (gtaylor@pps.net) and Jeff Spalding (jspalding@pps.net) are substituting for Vice Principal Altman while she is away. Both VP Taylor and VP Spalding are long time retired PPS school administrators. Please reach out to them between now and winter break as needed for your 11th grader.

Seeking Performing Arts Photos
IBW parents of Performing Arts Students,
I just completed a collage of photos in the hallway outside of the Athletic Department (see a not so great photo below). I would also like to create a collage of photos in the Performing Arts hallway but I do not have access to many photos like I do for athletics. If you have any photos from before, during or after band or choir concerts or anything taken during a school play, please email them to my at lvanhorn@pps.net.
Thanks!
Leanne Van Horn
Seeking Magazine Donations
Several art students have expressed interest in collage this year. If you have any spare magazines with a lot of pictures that you would like to donate for our artists, please drop them off at the main office and mark with my name.
Thank you,
Marie Pearson
Art Teacher
Thanksgiving Food Boxes
If you are a family in need of a food box for Thanksgiving please email our social worker Britni Locke at blocke@pps.net. We will have about 20 boxes to give to families.
NEWS FROM OUR DISTRICT
COMMUNITY NEWS/RESOURCES
SW Portland Community Band
The SW Portland Community Band has a winter concert coming up on Saturday, December 14 at 5 pm at the Multnomah Arts Center. They will play their usual program of holiday and traditional favorites. Food and beer available, and all proceeds benefit the Ida B. Wells High School band program.
Other great news for the SW Community Bank is that they finally bought and received a beautiful set of chimes for their percussion section. They have been raising funds for several years to purchase this expensive new instrument, long- and much-needed by both the Wells band and our band.
More information about the SW Portland Community Band here: https://www.swportland.band/.
