Message from the Superintendent
Dear RSU 21 Community,
I want to discuss an event that happened at Monday’s school board meeting that has prompted conversations about our district’s policy on transgender student-athletes, specifically athletes who identify as female and play in female sports.
First, we remain focused on our primary mission: providing every student with the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed in a supportive educational environment. Our approach aligns with both Maine state law and our fundamental values as an educational institution.
Secondly, the RSU 21 School Board of Directors stands in solidarity with the administration on this subject. Board Chair Matthew Stratford said the following:
“RSU 21 remains committed to the safety, well-being, and dignity of all our students. We recognize there are evolving legal frameworks at both state and federal levels that affect various school policies, including student athletics. The board will continue working with our legal counsel to ensure our policies align with applicable laws while maintaining our primary focus on supporting all our students.
We want every student in RSU 21 to know they belong here and are valued members of our school community, including our LGBTQ+ students. Our commitment to providing a safe, supportive learning environment where all students can thrive remains steadfast as we navigate evolving policies.”
Our district's athletic programs are designed to provide all students with opportunities for growth, teamwork, and athletic achievement. In accordance with the Maine Human Rights Act, we do not discriminate based on gender identity or expression. This position is supported by extensive research showing that inclusive policies lead to better educational outcomes for all students.
The recent federal executive order does not alter our obligations under Maine law or our commitment to maintaining a safe and equitable learning environment. Our policies continue to protect all students' rights to participate in athletics consistent with their gender identity while ensuring fair competition and opportunities for everyone.
We remain dedicated to fostering an environment where every student-athlete can compete, learn, and grow with dignity and respect.
Much love,
Terri Cooper

"Redcoats and Revolutions" at MSK
On Friday, the eighth-grade social studies classrooms at MSK were transformed into a Revolutionary War-era mock restaurant, but not to serve food.
Instead, students served knowledge to parents, teachers, and other community members who came in as restaurant "guests."
The students presented information about significant events, figures, and concepts from the American Revolution.
The project, created by MSK social studies teachers Ben Fogg (left) and Dan Sherman (right), uses the table service approach to help develop students’ presentation and public speaking skills.
Musician and educator Russell Kaback entertains MSK students
Thanks to a PTG grant, 7th-grade students at MSK attend an in-school performance by Maine-based artist and educator Russell Kaback this past Tuesday.
Mr. Kaback presented a poignant one-man musical based on the true story of his grandfather, Szyjek Magier, a Jewish-Polish teenager who survived four years in Nazi labor and concentration camps during World War II. His unique storytelling style combines original songs, guitar, characters, and sound effects while incorporating personal interviews, testimonies, in-depth research, and imagination.

RSU 21 runs a play-based program for 4- and 5-year-olds, focusing on personal & social development, creative arts, early language & literacy, physical education, math, science, and social studies. All of this early learning helps children thrive at a critical time in their young lives.
For a look at a typical pre-K day for RSU 21 students, this video shows what to expect when arriving at KES–story time, outdoor play, a family-style lunch, and lots of learning through movement, music, and play! Healthy breakfasts and lunches are available to students through RSU 21 and transportation on school buses is an option for kids living in any of the district’s three towns.
