Superintendent Weekly Update
from the desk of Kathy Amos
April 4, 2025
As we reflect on the six months since Hurricane Helene’s devastation in Yancey County, I want to take a moment to thank each of you. You have been a ray of sunshine and a source of hope as we continue the journey toward long-term recovery.
Your dedication and countless volunteer hours have made an incredible impact—supporting students, families, one another, and our community with essential needs. Our churches came together to serve hundreds of Thanksgiving meals. During the holiday season, we were able to provide Christmas gifts to over 700 students. Next week, 315 Easter meals will be distributed to families.
A special thank you goes out to Bertie, Wayne, Mooresville Graded school districts, and the many others who have generously contributed funds to ensure our students can still experience the joy of spring field trips.
We are truly blessed—and in turn, we continue to be a blessing to others. Thank you for everything you do for our public school system and for this incredible community each and every day.
YCS Receives New CTE Bus!
A new bus was recently delivered to Yancey County Schools. This bus will be used to transport students to various workplaces for paid internships as well as local, regional and state CTE competitions. The purchase of this new bus was made possible due to a grant received from Dogwood Health Trust.
CTE Director Cynthia Deyton shared, “We are so excited to have the CTE bus. This is a big step forward in helping us provide increased accessibility to CTE activities for students who do not have transportation. We are very thankful to Dogwood Health Trust for their support in helping to meet our students' needs!”
Thank You Sawyer!
Sawyer Silver used his experience from Mr. Dotts' carpentry class to reinforce the steps for Kindergarten registration pictures.

Thank You to Bertie County Schools!
Superintendent Dr. Smallwood along with Bertie County Schools office staff and board members visited the YCS Central Office on Friday to share love and compassion. Their district graciously raised over $17,000 to assist YCS students with Spring field trips. They have been through many hurricanes and reached out with empathy and understanding. We are extremely grateful for their generosity! Please watch the heartwarming video from their school system to ours :)
