Wiggin Street Parent Update
May 10, 2024
Happy Mother's Day!
Better Together
Dear Wiggin Street Families,
We want to take time to say thank you for all the kind gestures during Teacher Appreciation Week. On Monday, Friends of Wiggin Street provided staff with breakfast, coffee, and tea from Lannings. They also provided snacks and goodie bags throughout the week, and Thursday blossomed with flowers and cards from students. We finished the week with a staff lunch of pizza and salads. I am so grateful for the wonderful teachers and staff at Wiggin Street. Thank you for all you do!
I also want to thank you to Mrs. Springer for a wonderful K-2 program this week. The growth of all the students this year was obvious in the performances. Students showed such confidence and poise on stage. The students sang beautifully and were extremely well prepared.
Next week is a big week for field trips! On Tuesday, 3rd Grade is going on their Mount Vernon History/Community Service field trip, 4th Grade has Ag Day, and 5th grade heads to Heartland for 5th Grade Camp.
Have a great weekend,
Christy Grandstaff

Kindergarten Clean Up Crew
What do you do when kindergarteners ask if you need your office cleaned? You say, "Yes!" They did an amazing job and earned some play money.
4th Quarter PBIS Event: Duct Tape and a Frozen Treat
Students are working this quarter for 50 PBIS points. The reward is a piece of Duct Tape to participate in Duct Taping me to a wall. While I'm hanging out, LOL, they will enjoy a frozen treat at recess. The culminating event will be when they come back in and pass through the hallway to see me all duct taped!

National Park Camping
As the culminating event for the Kindergarten City Project, as Travel Agents, 5th graders are planning a "camping vacation" to a National Park for the Kindergarten and 3rd Grade Buddies. A simulation will be held on the school playground that includes roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over a real campfire, Camp Music, Camp Games, Wading Pools, a Storyteller, Birdwatching, and a National Park Trail to learn about each one!
The campfire has been approved by the Mount Vernon Fire Department with the following guidelines:
1. size - three feet in diameter by two feet in height.
2. Only clean seasoned firewood or the equivalent can be burned (to keep the smoke down).
3. Need to have an extinguishing agent, water hose, sand or some other extinguishment method on site. (would suggest a water can extinguisher or two)
4. Constantly attended until extinguishment.
5. I would recommend a fire ring, or some other way to contain the fire not just on the ground. and precautions taken to keep the fire from spreading.
The campfire will be manned the entire time.
Ryan's Cases for Smiles
5th Grade students, with the help from Terri Lewis and her crew of volunteers, made whimsical pillowcases today to donate to families in hospitals around the globe. Learn more about Ryan's Case for Smiles by clicking on the link below.

Road Closure begins May 28th!
Village council held a special session on Monday April 22nd at 7pm to update the community regarding the construction at the intersection of Route 229 and Wiggin Street between May 28, 2024 and November. The construction will require road closure, and the session covered how travel will be impacted to and from the village. KnoxPages covered the session and published this article. More information can be found here on the Kenyon website.
